My 40GB ps3 cannot play ps2 titles

You had to do your research my son 40gig has no emulation while they 60/80 (not sure of the sizes) do.

Quite correct. They have software emulation as a solution to play PS2 games. The move to drop PS2 compatibility was a purely strategic move.:(

They need to recover the costs. The way to do that is sell more PS3 titles, and at the same time pay off the research.

I do agree that its ass though. Imagine u were Japanese! Threy have more PS2 titles than anyone else.

Note to PS3 fanboys: you don't experience this problem with ANY version of the Xbox 360 :P

Seems a pathetic thing to do. They swapped to software emulation some time ago and then dropped that from the 40gig. I can't see how they are saving money by dropping something that is not hardware reliant.

If I had not bought a 360, I would have been pissed off since I have a large PS2 library.

It was partly software/hardware. Now they took away the hardware part and thus its broken.

You sure about that? My understanding was that the original US/JP PS3 included only the PS2's "Emotion" chip and that it was removed from the EU/2nd line of PS3's and replaced by software emulation. I can't recall any other PS2 hardware still being present in those.

sum1 must have modded a PS3 by now...

Xboxs are modded as much as PS2's these days...

can it be fixed with a chip?
As far as I know no such mod can be done to a PS3, but assuming I'm correct in saying that the PS2 emulation is done purely on a software level then I'm sure it would be possible once/if PS3 homebrew becomes a reality

With some custom firmware you could probably get PS2 emulation back.
There is rumour that PS2 games will be sold on the PSN, so hang tide for a little bit, though more likely is that it is titles changed to work on PS3 and take advantage of HD.

PS3 40 - no emu
PS3 60 (NTSC) - hardware support for PS2
PS3 60 (PAL) - software emulation
PS3 80 (NTSC) - software emulation
