My current line can only support 1Mbps?

I recently switched to a Telkom Closer package and requested the ADSL capability to be activated on the line. They told me the line would only be able to support a 1Mbps connection.

How does that work? Could my cabling be that of older, outdated technology? I thought Telkom merely capped the speeds at the exchange with the line rental fee you are paying for?

EDIT: Would I be able to qualify for the current line upgrade which Telkom is undertaking (1Mbps -> 2Mbps, etc.)?

Could be that you just live too far from the exchange.

Think I found the exchange I should be operating from (nearest one). It supports 10Mbps connections so I assume then my cable is of older technology?

Only way to tell is once the line is in and we have a look at your line stats.

Found the specific exchange my line is connected to (using telephone number in a query), not the one closest to me. The one my line currently is connected to, it about 40km away, while the nearest exchange is +-6km away. Would there be a specific reason for that?

Telkom is weird like that. You could try ask them to move your line over, but it's usually easier just to order a separate line.
