Wow, such a surprise, finally.

So guys, now what do I do? I'm asking because I am positively dysfunctional when it comes to dealing with Telkom and ISP's. I am currently on 512 uncapped unlimited with MWEB.

I suppose the first step would be to contact Telkom to apply for an upgrade? Then, check to find an ISP package that's suitable. What upgrade would you advise? I'd be happy to stay with MWEB; less hassle than cancelling I think.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And apologies if I am wasting your time, but that's what I'm here for - to get the experts' opinions!

First things first.

As of yesterday Telkom gave you a free line speed bump from 512 to 1024. You would not notice the difference as your ISP (MWeb uncapped) restricts you to 512. If you want to take advantage of it, you will need to upgrade from MWeb 512 Uncapped to Mweb 1024 Uncapped.

If you want to go the full 10 yards, then you need to first test to see what line speed you can expect. Post your line stats here and the wise men will assist.

If they are good, then you need to choose an ISP and apply to Telkom for the line speed upgrade.

At this stage economics kick in. 10Mb/s Uncapped is not cheap!

Thanks for the quick replies. Head is spinning from all the information, hehe!

I am in Melville, for what it's worth. It may already have had 4mbps capability for a while, but I only checked today.

Mmmm ... how do I get line stats? Shall I just search here? I'm sure I'm not the first to ask.

Just tell us what router/modem you using and we can help regarding line stats from there :)
 
Not sure if this works but try it

There is a page within the router GUI that displays the line stats. Click the link below.

http://192.168.1.254

Uder Configuration, choose WAN, then ADSL from the menu on the left.

If you are prompted to login, the username is admin and the password is admin.

Go into your router, look for Router Status then Show Statistics if the above does not work ;-)

Price is going to be the big factor here, you're on 512kb uncapped but have a 1mb line now, so it's:

R70 more to get 1mb uncapped

Now to move to a 4/10Mb line you pay an extra R87 for the increased line rental to Telkom so..

R327 more to get 4mb uncapped (and having a 10mb line means you run at true 4mb, instead of around 3.6mb that people without 10mb capable exchanges get)
R1887 more to get 10mb uncapped

I'd guess 10mb is out of your price range, but even if you settle for a lower speed uncapped you could get, for example, a 3Gb account from Mweb for R79 and use that when you really need full 10Mb unshaped speeds.

If you feel you don't need uncapped any more and want to enjoy unshaped 10Mb (which would be pretty sweet) then get a TRLTech/WebAfrica/any other cheap unshaped high cap account. For the price of 4mb uncapped you could get 50GB on 10Mb. If that's enough for your needs then it will perform much better than having uncapped.

Not worth it in my opinion, i was on 4meg and i just downgraded to 1meg on the news that all 512k get upgraded to 1meg. 1meg is the perfect package in regards to internet, the price is decent the speeds are decent what more could u ask for, im not sure what you can do with a 10meg line that you cant do with a 1meg line exept download 10 times faster which in 90% of the cases really isn't really needed..

Except with 10 meg you can share it with 10 users and each only pay 10% of the costs + learn a lot about networking in the process...

Just a note than you *will* see about a 15% increase in speed between being on a line that is the same speed as your ISP package and one that is faster. Mweb's throttling seems to discount traffic overhead - on a 512 account on a 4mbps line I got 62-64kB/s instead of the 52-54kB/s I was getting on the same account on a 512k line.

OK, here are my line stats:

download upload

connection speed 7008kbps 640kbps
line attentuation 17db 8db
noise margin 21.2 db 12db

I have no idea what any of this means! :-)
 
It means you have a good to excellent line to your telkom exchange.
You can expect 7Mb/s download speeds and you should not experience problems with sync.

So, you are good to go, congrats!

Excellent news! Now the challenge will be dealing with our friends at Telkom and finding a new ISP ... I think I'll opt for 4MB unshaped, but I need to check whether I need uncapped or whether a cap of 50GB would be sufficient for my needs.
 
If your usage is ~50GB/month, then it is not economic to use the 10MB line, and even the 4MB (Telkom +ISP package) is overkill..

Usage tends to be proportional to line speed, so expect your bandwith expectations to go up with the faster line.
It all depends on how you use the line, heavy downloaders need full linespeed more than total speed.

*Usually* It only takes a call to Telkom to get the line upgraded. Takes +- 2-4 days
 
My last 2 line upgrades were done within an hour of the phonecall ^
 
OK, I'm almost certain that I want unshaped uncapped on a 4MB line. (I like the odd torrent ..) I think I'm going to cancel MWEB and opt for another ISP package. May I ask for specific advice on an ISP package here or should I start a new thread on ADSL ISP discussions?
