Yesterday I had my turn at the dreaded licensing department, not to renew my cars licence, but my own card, the one needed to operate a vehicle legally on the road, the one who gives you permission to drive like a lunatic and nearly kill everyone while on your way to buy some milk and cigarettes.
I dreaded this. The cramped spaces, so close to each other you can smell the kind soap the person next to you uses, if any. It was hot as well, enough so that given enough time a chicken would be well cooked and ready to eat after the long shift they have to work, all 6 hours of it. The staff also looked very tired, most of them often went to a small door in the corner, and stayed away long, must be something they ate the night before.
They were also very knowledgeable about where to go in and what specific seat to sit on. It felt lke a military training camp, back when we still had this. All of this giving the impression that the chaos was in fact organized, which is similar I would imagine the mind of a mad genius would work.
Sadly though they had some system problems, which meant when it came to paying (and prying that they would indeed issue the correct renewal) only cash was accepted, but as it is with the world of computer these days, I assumed it is not a common occurrence when it comes to this.
They had a good view out of the windows though. I saw a couple of pet rats the size of my boerboel, with shiny pelts and well-kept claws, and all the broken down Wendy houses was neatly piled all over the place, I think I saw some empty bags of cement, most likely form some renovations done to the ground keepers place four years ago, as some decoration, and the way the metro police parked the vehicles also just warms my heart, vehicles were kept under semi shade, and the motorbikes tires were semi inflated. If cars could be comfortable, this would be paradise.
I felt sad to leave after only 45 minutes, especially with it being empty. I made some friends; I just hope they come over their stomach bugs very soon. As for the hobbit sized lady driving the 5 ton truck in front of me while on my way out, I hope she gets her license, so that she can be employed as a delivery driver, she might just need some pillows to sit on to be able to see out of the truck!
I will miss this place, and can’t wait to go back in a couple of months. I wonder which seats they will have reserved for me next time!
