So I been saving up for a while now, I've got R20k atm but I want to spend around R35k on a new car.

I'm still young as **** and poor so I don't mind driving an old car for a few years. I make R4500 a month and about R2000 of that goes to expenses.

I was wondering if anyone drives an old BMW? I was looking at some 1991-1998 ones for around R35k. They look much nicer than the VW Golfs everyone else my age is driving. God forbid I don't want an Uno.

So what you guys think? Below are some links to possible options.

1. Don't buy a car on gumtree.

2. Get a Tazz.

3. Look here.

Why not on Gumtree? I'm a big fan of Toyota but not the Tazz in particular. Why are you recommending a Tazz?

Coz it's cheap, reliable and cheap to maintain. With your salary stay far, far away from those "premium" cars. You'll only cry when something breaks.

yes do not look at an older bmw etc, toyota tazz is a good suggestion.

you can buy off gumtree, junkmail etc but as alwasy be very very careful

hey a nice clean 96-99 honda.
good enough to be your first car i'd say.

Another thing to remember is that a person's first car is usually the one they prang the most.

With R2500 left a month, Tazz, Honda, or Mazda 323 is your only sensible option.
My first car was a 2001 Mazda 323 Sting sedan. I loved that car. Unfortunately I had an accident and had to get rid of it.

Cheap to maintain. Of course no aircon, power starring, ABS and stuff, but even a hobo can afford that car.

what about VW Polo/Golfs? I know I said I don't fancy a Golf but they look better than a Tazz.

my dad says any monkey can work on a golf

Your dad is correct. But getting a VW is just asking to be hijacked. They are the most stolen car in SA and insurance, if you plan on it, will be sky high.

Yeah stay away from the E36 BMWs. The engine is reliable, but once the electronics, and the little things around the engine start giving in, you're going to cry.

Ohh, yeah I definitely want insurance and don't want to pay more than R400 a month - wishful thinking I know. Guess that leaves me with Honda? Any decent looking ones?

You should also budget for at least 3rd party insurance cover otherwise you're screwed in the case of an accident.

As mentioned before, go Japanese - cheap to maintain and economical.

he should budget for at least comprehensive :p

I don't think he'd be able to afford it with his salary and age, especially since he's looking to spend at most R400 on it. That leaves him with R1,600 free, and he still has to buy petrol. Dude is screwed :D

I use R1000 on transport each month atm - hence why I don't come home with R4500 a month.

I guess I can push it up? How much would full comprehensive be? My dad got full cover on his Bantam for 330 a month.

on a car of R35k R400 should cover comprehensive no problem, go to a broker.

how old are you?

you could also always let your dad take out the insurance with you as the regular driver

And yes the car can still be in your name.

Say he get a rate of 6%

then R35000 x 6% = R2100
R2100/12 = R175 pm

edit, not there is a brokerage fee etc so it should push it just over R200 etc

Your dad's a lot older, more experience and possibly hasn't claimed in a while, hence the low premium. One option is to insure it on his name, with you listed as a nominated driver.
