My first car.

So I been saving up for a while now, I've got R20k atm but I want to spend around R35k on a new car.

I'm still young as **** and poor so I don't mind driving an old car for a few years. I make R4500 a month and about R2000 of that goes to expenses.

I was wondering if anyone drives an old BMW? I was looking at some 1991-1998 ones for around R35k. They look much nicer than the VW Golfs everyone else my age is driving. God forbid I don't want an Uno.

So what you guys think? Below are some links to possible options.

I assume you're in Western cape since all your searches are there but it may be worth making a trip to Pta or getting someone you know to pay a visit to Auto Fair on a Sunday. Private sellers, great deals. Bought a car there last week.

But i'd say corsa/fiesta of around 35k would be your best value for money. there is quite a few corsa's with aircon and mags even for around 35k on carfind.co.za

Tight budget but try out the guys at Surf4Cars. I'm sure they have something that fits your budget

on a car of R35k R400 should cover comprehensive no problem, go to a broker.

how old are you?

you could also always let your dad take out the insurance with you as the regular driver

And yes the car can still be in your name.

Say he get a rate of 6%

then R35000 x 6% = R2100
R2100/12 = R175 pm

edit, not there is a brokerage fee etc so it should push it just over R200 etc

im 20 years old

With R2500 left a month, Tazz, Honda, or Mazda 323 is your only sensible option.
My first car was a 2001 Mazda 323 Sting sedan. I loved that car. Unfortunately I had an accident and had to get rid of it.

Cheap to maintain. Of course no aircon, power starring, ABS and stuff, but even a hobo can afford that car.

you got some rich hobos in that area man ! :D

mazda 323 is a +1 from me ! LOL (no im not a hobo)

I use R1000 on transport each month atm - hence why I don't come home with R4500 a month.

I guess I can push it up? How much would full comprehensive be? My dad got full cover on his Bantam for 330 a month.

Depends on the cover, I'm paying R380 pm for R105K on my i10 and I'm 37. My wife is paying R200 pm for Atos for R50K.

All I can say is do not go direct, speak to a broker. To give you an idea, my wife was with First For Women (for two months) and she was paying R400 for less cover than what she now gets for R200.

My first car(golf 3 gti)... I thought was a good buy at R42K but has cost me over 15K in 2 years including regular maintenance to get it into a good condition, and I still have some minor things that need to be fixed. It was a gumtree sale, the car was not a bad buy on the surface and is reliable but I should have paid a few K less.

So regarding gumtree the cars are cheap for a reason most of the time... and if you're new to cars like I was you might make an impulsive choice that you'll regret.

What's wrong with an Uno? I recently upgraded (yes you read right, upgraded) from an Audi to a Uno, probably one of the wisest decisions I have ever made.

No BMW, Audi or any newer modern car for me thanks, they are expensive to maintain and full of crappy electronics. Get yourself Golf Mk1 or a Tazz instead...

Guy, look around for a nice 1992 Corolla GLi Twincam 16v. Aircon, p/s, c/l, leather and that legendary status, seats and dashboard. Its the best car you can buy for that type of money, plus its light on petrol, decent on insurance and helluva cheap to maintain, and the best part is good performance.

Otherwise a Tazz is a great first car

Your dad is correct. But getting a VW is just asking to be hijacked. They are the most stolen car in SA and insurance, if you plan on it, will be sky high.

But so are Toyotas!! It all depends what area you live in. ANY popular car becomes a potential hijack target, unfortunately.

If you can get a decent Golf or Polo for that price, which is possible, but unlikely, I don't see why you shouldn't go for it.

For GOD'S sake don't buy an old BMW - that would rate as the worst decision you ever made...:(

for 35k a golf or tazz is the best ...you can also pick up a corsa for that price

all 3 will be light on fuel and cheap to maintain and you can work on most of the things on the car by yourself

golf 1's are not light on fuel to be honest...

not as light as a tazz but i had a 1.3 and i used to get 650km average on the tank which was driving long distance tho

My gf has a tazz and driving around in cpt she gets like 750 or so

i have a 1.4i golf now and i would love to see 550km in city driving and i tend to drive faster with the 1.4i

Sounds about right yeah... my golf does around 400 - 500 km city driving, not fun.

When my car was written off I got a golf 1 to drive around with for two weeks and that thing used no petrol, at first I though the needle was stuck :D
