My first Diesel

You're imagining the performance gain ;) EGR doesn't improve performance. It just lowers emissions in some circumstances.

The ASV on my wife's tdi failed, I sourced one from overseas for less than half of the price here.
I think the tandem pump is also on its way out, leaking a bit. Will do the same thing.

no idea how to do that. took to three mechanics and each quoted me a crap load to fix. settled on the lowest quote of R8k.

all of them told me the only option is to replace as cleaning is temp fix.
 
On some vehicles you'll need to update the software when you block the egr valve, else you'll see the check engine light come on.
I cleaned mine on the Civic I had, purely as a preventative measure, at around 120k km- was also just a case of buying the two gaskets beforehand, then diy maybe 30 minutes to an hour, including cleaning everywhere my hands and/or tools would reach. Will probably do the same on my Rexton at some point. the egr valve does 0 for performance, it's an emissions thing.

On the diesel side in the V40, there's no D5 - choice is D2, D3 and D4.

Always been a big Volvo fan. Previously had two C30 T5 R Designs as well and glad to be back

Thanks ! I have a XC70 now but want something smaller as I do much less highway than I used to do and its consumption in town is pure insanity.
 
So, on my first official tank and driving like a granny - literally. Purposely going out my way to see how much I get off the tank and taking advantage of the quiet roads. So far, not super amazing ....

I seem to average 7.9l/100km and this morning taking the highway to work (28km), was only 5.9l/100km. Still a huge saving over my Audi at 12l/100km ... just not *as* good.

My brother often gets in the 5l/100km territory in a 120d

Interesting. I got 3.9l/100 from my TDI cupra going from Randburg to Hatfield on a quiet day.
Average on that car was around 5.
 
330d. 5.1l/100km on a road trip over the holidays. Fairly loaded. Aircon blasting, cruise control set to 130km/h.

That's higher than I would expect for your diesel, especially on the highway and driving like a granny.
 
It's higher than I expected as well ...

I was getting ready to challenge my brother in an economy run - but think I'll pass ;) I'll do a proper long trip March / April - but so far not super impressed with economy.

EDIT : Maybe the trip computer is still fizzu, as we're only on the 1st effective tank. I'll double check what I get over the next few tanks.

It's got this 'achievement unlocked' (cursive E light) that you only get occasionally when driving really economical. There are people that have only seen it once or twice in 6 months ... but in 3 weeks, I've already unlocked it 6 or 7 times. So not my driving ...

Cool piece of tech, definitely babying it then. Perhaps work out the economy at the pump? I know OBCs can be wildly off at times. The one in my Subaru Legacy was off by as much as 2L/100km in either direction at times, man that this was a POS. I won't forget averaging 24L/100km in Sandton traffic one morning in a hurry. Though even my Jazz can be as much as 0.5L/100km out (but to be fair the economy at the pump is always better than the OBC in the Jazz, so I don't mind).

So another 2 months and ... I have the heaviest diesel ever. My average since I got it (I think 4 or 5 tanks) is 9.6 per 100kmh.

Though, is one of my most fuel economic cars I've had

My Series 1 V40 2.0T gets about that.
There must be something wrong there I would expect it to be lower. Check the OBD diagnostics.
 
Yea I'll definitely get it checked out.

My brothers 120d gets 7s when he drives the whole journey like a madman. On a normal journey he's often sub 6 .

My best ever - once - driving like a Granny over 28km on the highway was 5.9 ....
 
So to add :

I got 5.3l/100km down to DBN and 5.9l/100km up. So average for the trip was 5.7l/100km which didn't seem too bad? It's just very, very thirsty in bumper to bumper traffic.

Gone in for a service now, cleaning filters, firware etc - so I'll check going forward

Bumper to bumper has different meanings for different people. 5.7 is about right for the durban trip, and sub 10 is not bad for real stop-start traffic. You can probably improve on it with driving style - avoiding the brakes etc...

My 1.9 dci is also thirsty in start / stop traffic, more than the 1.6 petrol I had before. If I had to hazard a guess based on the trip computer's current consumption reading, my petrol car was much more economical during normal acceleration through the gears than the diesel.
Diesels like to cruise in top gear.
