It's a proven fact that ATI/AMD have eaten substantially into Nvidia's market share.

This sort of tech market is actually weathering the storm surpisingly well.

Dude ati has not even come close to putting nvidia out of business, it takes amd needing a dual card to compete with nvidia's single card 280, now imagine when they release a 280 x 2, it will take amd's 4870x2 and stomp on it.

At this moment they cannot even think of a 280 x 2 due to power and heat constraints so AMD does have the better product AT THE MOMENT no matter what the fanbois think :)

Here's hoping AMD's next release keeps the pressure up on Nvidia and brings pressure to bear on Intel.
 
I don't know, but imo the 4870x2 is a bit old now especially because it is so expensive, if it was R4000 it would be a different story.

A 350w psu? lol. With the system you planning on definately look for a good 550w+, Corsair if you can afford it.

If it was me upgrading i'd only spend around R8k now and save the other 4k for your next system in 12 months time, you could spend R30000 now and you will still want to upgrade in 12 months, especially with I7 and phenom II already/nearly here.

is see rectron lists the Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R mobo as 2 x PCIX16 but on the gigabyte site it only has 1 x PCIEX16 ? WTF?

What I really need is a Crossfire Ready SLI Mobo, with 4 x Dual Channel DDR2 Slots - but rectron's SLI Mobo's are either DDR3, or DDR2 but flippen expensive. what to do?
 
I am not a fanboi, my last vga card was 3850. people said there would not be a 9800gx2 but there was. All i am saying is that the amd x2 does not rape 280 that badly, only time it really rapes it is at very high res, add to the fact if a new game comes out you must wait for drivers to use both cores.

I don't think the x2 is a better product as such, sure is more powerful but has a couple of things that some may not like.
 
I spent almost 30 grand over the years to complete my system, and I'm very happy with what I got. Yeah it's not the latest, but it runs everything I've thrown at it very well. I would just need more hard drive space, and perhaps a Blu-ray drive sometime soon. A new graphics card sometime down the lane, but at the moment my 8800GTX is still very much ok.

Each pc build is different, but in the end if it makes you happy, then it was worth it by far.

for a PSU I would suggest either a Corsair TX650 or TX750. They are pricey, but probably the best PSU's available today.

50-60 AMPS on a single rail should power that 4870X2 nicely. If I recall it pulls 30amps or something.

I know my Coolermaster 700W doesn't want to power it since CM in their wisdom decided a 700W should have 4x 12V rails

For a Motherboard I would get a Asus P5Q (don't worry about the 2x 8 lane PCI-E, if you are going with the X2)
CPU I would go for a Q6600 (its best value), get a proper cooler for it (Zalman or thermalright) and overclock it to 3Ghz
RAM - 2x 2GB DDR2-800
Case: To keep that 4870X2 cool I would suggest something like the Antec Three hundred (about R1000)

Get the motherboard elsewhere, that's what you do.

Keeper only boards you are going to get that are crossfire and SLI are the X58's

p.s. why even mention SLI when you are thinking of a 4870 or a 4870x2 ??

I was questioning the need for it, ..he obviously was trying to be a douche towards me, ..but it all worked out in the end because he basically pwned himself by actually being the one who doesn't know what they are talking about. I love natural justice. Karma, gotta love it.

Hehe, I see what you mean, however it was only released 4 months ago, and the prices would be a lot better if it weren't for the currency drop.. but we're gradually crawling our way back.

I'll check for some reviews, but yes, 16x16.

Can't find any decent reviews, but I reckon it's probably pretty class.
