My mum had a stroke....

Sorry to hear, had a similar issue.

PS: they can not touch you past the estate. If you can not pay it and have nothing of value in the estate, tell em good luck and move on. Good thing was that most my mom's assets where transfered to me before she passed. So there was not much they could lay claim to.

I seriously doubt that she signed the papers as she was the one suffering a stroke. Someone in the family signed papers to agree to the financial burden, especially as a private hospital will normally transfer a patient to a state facility if they know no-one can pay.

I'm sorry for what has happened to you, my father suffered a stroke that affecte him negatively for about 3 years and eventually another killed him later. It's a horrible and hard thing to deal with, a hospital plan is a definate must, for anyone if you do not want to be treated in a state hospital. To try and pay private fees otherwise is insane.

She did have a medical Aid and was admitted on that, but it did not cover everything, and was quickly exhausted. Trust me the Hospital did the, we will blacklist you and all other threats.

They can not touch you past the estate, unless like you said, signed surety but I would ask for the admission forms if I was the OP. Loads of times they threaten without any legal binding as they don't want to be the ones taking the loss.

Yeah unfortunately I signed surety, I forgot to mention I had to pay a deposit of R55k before they were willing to admit her. Out of desperation I went ahead and paid up.

Unfortunately there is no policies. Just bills left.

After a discussion with the hospital we have arranged to pay off over a longer period. The doctors are however not so forgiving. They want their money ASAP. The labs have also granted a discount, it is a small discount which I am grateful for.

The figures I have received thus far is just shocking

3hour theatre usage=R48k
Labs(blood)= R11500 (this after discounts)
ICU=R12500 per day(14 days in total)
30 minute gastro antorologist =R5k
Anesthetist= R22k
Still awaiting for the neuro surgeon, which I know his fee will be just as ridiculous

And the list goes on and on

Those surgeons are really makes a mockery of the Hippocratic Oath IMO. They're essentially extorting the patients in exchange for their time.

Imoe.

Are you an only child? If not, can't your siblings help with the monthly payments?

Also what did your R55k count towards?

Apologies I have been quiet, been very busy sorting my mums affairs.

No I am not an only child, 4 other siblings. The 55k counted towards the hospital costs. The final bills have amounted to R383 000 and some change, this includes all the doctors. The hospitals bill alone is R259 000, which they have agreed we may pay off.

Trying times ahead, but hopefully it will get better.

Thanks again all.

If you don't have the money can't you have yourself declared insolvent and they would have to write off the debt? I honestly have no idea how this works, hopefully someone else can enlighten us.

Sorry to hear about your situation though, sounds really kuk.

I think he'd like to try and avoid that as it gets recorded and would affect any future debt that he wanted to persue.

A few years ago, my infant daughter was admitted to a pvt hospital due to an emergency, we did mention numerous times during the admission that we didnt have medical aid but due to her condition, we were not allowed to leave with her. She was eventually transferred to Red Cross but it wasnt long until the bills started coming through. My husband called them and told them that they were obligated to stablise her and to go fly a kite. Although a few reminders/threats came after that, we just ignored. Nothing ever came of it.

Im sorry you have to go through this and for your loss but totally understand your desperation in signing etc, we did the same but wtf reads documents etc when a loved one is in a critical condition. Its just sick.

I have a few family members and 'aquaintances' who are in medicine who also rape the bank accounts of their victims. They started out wanting to help people, but greed took over and some charge fees way over medical aid rates to pay off their beach house or sports cars. If you want to be rich to the detriment of other people, then find something else to study and leave medicine to those good people who would do it to help others. A cousin of mine is a specialist/surgeon who makes around R5 million pa and charges much higher than medical aid rates. He admitted that some people are financially ruined after surgery but the conversation didn't end well.
