My Share Portfolio

But different people will have different view on Sasol's future earnings... So where does the Sasol hedge come into play?

that's exactly why we have 'buyers' AND 'sellers' - if we all agreed, there would be no market

The hedge is to lock in a specific favorable oil price or exchange rate, that has a big influence on their earnings

What platforms do you guys use to buy/sell your shares? Last time I had a look the fees associated with share trading I decided against it as my investment amounts were seemingly too low - leaned closer to Satrix due to the lower fees.

I use FNB currently but they are very limited, will be moving to Standard bank shortly... much more bang for the same buck as FNB!

That's how it rolls.

You're not emotionally attached to the demo portfolio, so it's always going to be different.

Brait's PE is still only 6.45.
I only have 200 shares in them that cost me R28.89.
Most brokers had them as a SELL or HOLD when I bought them, they're at R35.20 right now.

Their NAV is apparently only around R25

Jip still a great share, will hope for a bit of a pullback to around R32 and getting back in..

To the OP, why not use stop losses? I always use a 10% stop loss. I trade cfds, which is high risk.

I guess the key is to diversify your equity portfolio. Index funds are a good route, as are unit trusts. I think the big question right now should be, is it a good idea at all to be investing in equity now? With the US fiscal cliff on the horizon as well as euro-zone issues and local post-strike and political turmoil.. I've personally got my money bet on listed, and commercial property based unit trusts right now. No equity for me thank you.

I wonder if any of you can perhaps help me with this Lonmin rights offer?

I qualify to buy a certain number (9 for 5) of the nil paid shares at R19.4872 per share, which I intend doing, but I see they are now trading at about R18 per share.

Do you know if I can buy additional shares at the present R18 price? Will they also be converted to 'normal' shares once the rights offer is done?

I called the guy at ABSA stockbrokers, but he was clueless....

Here's my little portfolio - only a year in trading for the majority of the shares
I love using "portfolio" on Fin24 app to monitor this - but I heard they are shutting the app down...
Litha +37.8%
Vodacom + 31.52%
Curro +122.15%
Aspen +75.87%

total % move 267.34%
:) rather happy with this small handful

I just have STXDIV. I bought in just over 5 years ago and my 5 year return after costs and dividends where included has been about 11% per annum. Every now and then I re-invest dividends and interest from my BOE stockbroking account. For a low risk diversified ETF to return between 5 and 6% above inflation its not a bad option. If I had bought just after the 2008 crash instead of just before it would have looked even better but I'm not too fused to be honest.

Hi all.
I have a question on my share portfolio too!
I bought a number of shares a few years ago some of them have done well and others were absolute dogs!
I am in the process of selling the dogs but since the remainder are shares I would like to hold on to for a while is there a way I can do so without having to pay monthly or yearly fees to a stockbroker? Currenly I'm with ABSA where if you trade 5 or more times a year there is no fee but I haven't been doing that many trades so every year I pay the fee.
Is there a place where I can just "park" the shares?
Thanks

ive kept my dogs so thta i never forget what a total tool i was for not investigating more before i bought...

I'm not sure, but you could probably have your shares 'materialised' i.e. share certificates issued.....

You should rather decided if you will never again buy shares, or perhaps stay with ABSA and over a period sell off the dogs, attempting to achieve 5 trades per year, so that your account remains free

I've pretty much finished selling the dogs - at horrible losses but for the sake of moving on. Only one left to go..
As for buying more shares: I've realised I am MUCH better at picking asset managers than I am at picking individual shares.. So most of my money is in unit trusts and the like. So I doubt I would buy more....

also to try and write off the losses against possible profits when doing your tax

Try Computershare.

I pay R45 a month charges with FNB which isn't that bad.. anyone know of a cheaper one?

I use Imara - I found they are super efficient and the costs are good

A minimum non-refundable fee of R250 per annum, excluding VAT, will be charged to your account quarterly in arrears. It represents the total cost of opening the account, holding assets in safe custody, collection of dividends, managing rights attached to your scrip holdings, the administration of share splits, consolidations and other corporate actions.
