My shutter is kaputt. (goodbye, 300D)

I've been thinking about it and:
Canon 450D or Nikon D60

I'll have to go hold them again. I'll just get whichever one is more comfortable.
 
I've been spending some time and effort trying to get a friend of mine interested in photography. He inherited an old spotmatic - works fine but he complains about the cost of film and development. Anyway, we're at the point where he's willing to consider an entry level DSLR, but the budget is limited.

Do looking around I saw I can get a Nikon D40 + kit lens for £270 from Dixons with a £75 cash back - that's pretty good value!
 
Just found out the cashback is over. But yeah, still a good deal. When I was on holiday one girl on the tour had one. She was using it as a P&S, had no idea what to do with the other modes. So I showed her the basics - spent a fair bit of time playing with it - really nice! (the girl too :))
 
I need to buy a new body in the near future.
My 350D has worked hard and rarely falls short of what I need.
I will get it serviced and keep it attached to smaller zoom.

Replacement as no.1 body however, definitely a 40D.

Not when it comes to lenses. I've been price hunting and UK prices on the ones I'm looking at are almost as bad as here. :(
 
Bwana, for lenses there is no better than direct import from B&H in the US.
I would be surprised if there is a more cost effective route.

Rand is strengthening now a bit as well.

Bwana, our prices are determined by Canon Europe, that's why they are as bad here as over there :(

I'm going for the D40 soon as my first DSLR... They are so cheap in the US...$470 = R3600 :-) And they cost R6000 here...

Only problem is that the Nikon warranty is not international for Digital Cameras - it is for lenses though!

Camera bodies aren't usually cheap here either, although the cash-back deals help. They make it just expensive enough that the difference between buying it here an from NY/HK is about the same as the shipping, customs and tax, so it's not worth doing. I suspect the reason why the D40 is so cheap is simply because it's been superseded (probably discontinued too) and there's a huge stock surplus.

At that price, if it breaks, buy a new one :)

Come on, Game! I need that Nikon D40 special you once had for R4800. (still mad at myself that I did not buy one)
