My son and Autism

So my son has been diagnosed as having the Autism Spectrum Disorder (although we still need a pediatric nerologists input) about 2 months ago.

He started speaking in the beginning of last year. His mom then got breast cancer and had the mastectomy and chemo. Because of the chemo and her resistance being very low, his pediatrician decided that we remove him from creche. He started again this year, but was very unruly etc etc. we took him out, and had him tested. Autism, although the speech therapist doesn't want to "label" it as such, but the reading and his actions do point towards the fact.

he is receiving speech and occupational therapy at the moment, and it is helping, especially the OT.

one of the schools that deals with such disorders starts at R 12 000 / month, but luckily i got hold of another school, with an opening, for a bit cheaper. it has been running for 15 years, by a speech therapist herself. i am seeing the principal on Thursday afternoon.

is there anyone (friends etc) on the forum with similar [-]problems[/-] challenges ? or are there any schools in Pretoria worth a mention ?

baby steps i say..... take one day at a time. and i always look at my sig. just for a bit of motivation.

O BTW, there is a very nice movie about Adam, someone with Asperger's to watch, if you are interested.

My son has has Cerebral Palsy and all i can tell you is to take things one day at a time. Plan for the future, look for the right school and so on, but, take it one day at a time or you will lose your mind. Give him what he needs now, focus on the short term, but plan for the long term, if that makes any sense.

Another thing to do is to get in touch with support groups, talking about it helps a lot in terms of how to approach things, tips and tricks and such

Got ASD here, but theres so many versions of it so cant give advice unless I know which one he has since every disorder is different.

My oldest is also in the same boat. Was also diagnosed some months after the vaccine. He was great untill then.
He is currently in a school for Autism in Durbanville where there is more than 90% boys.

It is extremely hard to process this at first and it does not get easier with time.
Just be thankfull your wife is still here.
Only way to get through this is to work as a team.

I was always different since I was born so nothing contributed to it.

In my family its genetics, since a few of my cousins have a form of ASD also same with my brothers, same for the generations before that.

Hardly the intended direction for the thread though; hopefully that side track can end here, and people can stick to giving you relevant guidance and advice. Again, all the best with the obstacles you may face.

Seeing as there were ASD people undiagnosed before it for many centuries it definitely is a farce.

In those days they were not accepted so it was hidden then :p.

I am not an expert on autism and its causes but is there any way that your wife's health problems (which must have caused some issues in your family) were an attributing factor to his challenge, rather than it being autism ?

that's what his pediatrician suggested could have been a cause of the challenge, before we had him tested. Imagine him just being lazy to talk, and the tantrums being that of terrible two's ?

Like i said, a lot of his behavioral patterns suggests being on the ASD, but like therapist said she doesn't want to put such a big label on him.

OK, so here come the favour i wanna ask. I have never, believe it or not, bought anything online, and wouldnt even know where to start..... I want to buy all the episodes for my son, but as explained, don't know anything about online (affirmative) shopping, and to be honest, i don't like the idea.

Would someone please explain (in laymans terms) the process and steps of buying something on the Web. I am with Standard bank, if that helps.

You can try places like kalahari.com and takealot.com, both are local shops. Just go there, register and buy what u want using your credit card. They then deliver the items to you.

If there is even a vague possibility that your son (if he is on the ASD scales) can associate with Thomas the Tank Engine (and I would say its a good childrens program regardless of its possible benefits to kids on the ASD scales), then get some...

Have you had confirmation of your child being the ASD scale at all?

thanks for the link.

According to the Speech Therapist (x2) and Occupational Therapist (x2) reports, YES. We need a pediatric nerologists input but we are one a year long waiting list.

OK i'll take the plunge and get the whole online shopping thing going. Would have liked to get all the episodes as 1 set though.
