Okay just copied all my data to my 1500GIG Seagate!

Was planning on buying a second 1500G for backup, but now 2 weeks into this hard drive I can view the files but not access any...

The " Do you want to format comes up"?

NO! Why can I see all my file but not access them?

Basically you are at drowning loose.
You did flash the hdd with the latest firmware or was it one of the unaffected ones?

What is your drive model & serial#. Also, what firmware version are you running.

Drive making any clicking noises at all?

When switching it on, there is one or two clicking noises.

The thing is I can view my files but not open a video or copy anything.

It's a ST315003341AS

Fireware: CC1H

Don't you need the serial# to check with Seagate also?
 
Ok, your drive is originally one of the affected models but your firmware is up to date (CCxx) so this is not a firmware issue.

I did a bit of googling and it seems this does happen with the 1.5TB models. No solution for you but will keep looking.

Thanks ponder, what models where affected?

Why does all the small files work, but not the bigger ones?

Here is an outdated list, http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=2655020&postcount=15
There has been other models identified that are not on that list including yours but your firmware is up to date.

Try running Seatools on that disk (downloadable from seagate)

Also try and read the disk via a Linux LiveCD and see if you can access those problematic files.

Seems to be anything from BIOS to disabling the write cache to updating chipset drivers and OS update and no cut and dry solution for it.

But yeah, try with linux and Seatools and also check event viewer if there's any leads to the problem in there.

The bold above is all greek to me... :o

I'm busy downloading Seatools, not exactly sure what it is.
 
Ok simplest one first

administration tools > event viewer, look for errors or warnings in there that seem relevant.

Next one is to eliminate the OS, so booting a Linux Live CD will help with that.
 
Okay I've tried looking at the write cache - it is disabled

Just a strange thing, when I go into device manager it pick my 1.5TB external up as a "Usb Device"? That normal?

On the errors in event viewer, only a total copy error and a Net 2 error.

Will have a look at Linux now.
 
It's external plugged into USB? then it will show up as a USB device. Seeing as I've assumed its an internal drive I have to change my whole thinking on the problem.

IMO total copy is nasty stuff, I don't like that program one bit.

Anyway I would still proceed to check the large files with Linux and then come back to the usb thing.
