My worst nightmare!!

It's external plugged into USB? then it will show up as a USB device. Seeing as I've assumed its an internal drive I have to change my whole thinking on the problem.

IMO total copy is nasty stuff, I don't like that program one bit.

Anyway I would still proceed to check the large files with Linux and then come back to the usb thing.

It just an internal hdd with an an external hdd enclosure.

Normally my drives just stop working, this one works but makes 3 folder inaccessible, the other are working 100%. My movie folder (400G) shows up as empty now... For this, do you still recommend the Linux thing.

External HDD enclosures convert the drive to usb or firewire.
yes go linux and you can also try taking the drive out the enclosure and plugging it
straight into the Motherboard.

I know this might sound dumb but you sure you have not set them to be read only?

Thank goodness!!!!!

Yes!

I did a CHKDSK on my hard drive and it worked!! Phew!!!!

It's nearly 5am and now I finally can go to bed without dreading the day of tomorrow! :p

Thanks Drake and Ponder! :) And all the others! :)

Just a summary:

Start, Run, Cmd, CHKDSK D: /f (D was my Disk drive, f is for fix)

You were extremely lucky. Chkdsk can actually cause you to lose data in such situations. It will move data around which it finds to be suspect and render it very hard to recover.

External (USB) enclosures have been the bane of my life recently, with my g/f losing a 160Gb and a friend having lost data on a 500Gb and a 1Tb. One of the issues we found was that Windows would write to the disk if you right-clicked and chose "Properties", whilst your antivirus was busy checking the drive in the background. This lead to corruption of security info which Windows requires.

I was able to recover my friend's data by booting into Ubuntu (Linux) and copying the data off the drives.

I believe this is not a Hard Drive problem, but a Security Policy issue, you need to reset your file access for the files to Administrator or to your new User account on the pc you intend to access them on.

Good Luck...

I enjoyed this thread, arrived a bit late for comment though! :D

You could sense the tenseness in the atmosphere early this morning when I was still replying. I could literally smell him sweating :D

its not the HD, I've never had an issue with SGate, its most probably your HD enclosure, I've had endless *** with cheap enclosures, they sometimes dont end off the copy properly and also dont eject the drive properly. What make and model enclosure do u have, I can almost put my cock on a block, its the freeking enclosure, I've had simialir issues, which is aggravated by the sheer size of the HD

It could also be that the drive is simply a dud and on its way out, u will need to move your files off and do a full format, I know it takes a long time, but must be done, that will mark any bad sectors. This is a start. You can also try insert the drive directly into the machine and try pick it up and copy to it and see if the problem persists.

Have tried it in two enclosures, nothing. It makes this crackling noise and shows up in My Computer as a hard drive but shows a 0KB. :(

It asks for a format, when I try and format it, it says it can't format the drive. :(

dont want to sound obvious but if its not responding then its probably poked, return it for replacement....definitely, no sure what else to suggest

Have you tried removing it from the enclosure and plugging it into your MB via SATA?

Did you at least back your data up when you got it working?

A 100G was copied at 30mb/s. then it froze, I could still access the files after waking up, but after I restarted the HDD, it shows as EMPTY on My Computer

The only pc with SATA has only one SATA slot, and this 1500G doesn't have a OS. :( Maybe use a bootable cd?

yes go to the ubuntu link posted above and download the ubuntu cd, with it u can boot into an OS without installing, theres also some disk utilities that can help u
