Aaah! Turned it on on Friday afternoon and there it was...3 Red Rings of Doom. What now? I believe this kinda thing falls under a three year warranty?

Take it back today .. with the box... to the shop you bought it from (take out your game) they should put it on to check that it is broken. You might need the slip from when you bought it, or the warranty thing y.

It would not happen to a ps3 cuz ps3's don't have 3 rings... they just 1 light (and im a ps3 fan) but love gaming in general

@vember : i didnt say it wouldnt happen to a ps3 i said it wouldnt happen if he had a ps3 :)

why do these things happen with the xbox 360 though? for no reason?

Thanks guys. I've had my 360 for over a year now without any problems. These things happen and I still love my 360.

No. It's one of the first models that launched here in SA. I brought mine from CNA in early Jan 07.

I also joined the RROD-Club last night. Was planning to sit down for a bit of Simpsons-mayhem and... BOOOOOM! Well, not really 'booom' - a bit of a grinding noise & 3 flickering red lights staring me back in the face.

So, first things first. I phoned Microsoft this morning - got through to a very decent consultant called 'Mike'. I told him I need a ref. number for a swap-out & he asked me whether it
1. flashed 3 red lights (yes)
2. the power-brick's light stayed green (yes), and
3. booted up after restarting, removing and plugging power back in etc. (no)
and promptly generated my reference number.

After being given a bit of a runaround from various CNA's this morning (no stock etc.), I phoned MI Digital directly. Spoke to a helpful guy called 'Francis'. If he's to be believed, they'll arrange for a brand new Elite to go to the CNA closest to me, where I can swap & pay the difference...

If it pans out, I'll be very satisfied with everyone's input, barring the think-as-bricks staff on the gound at CNA! :D I'll keep you posted.

Follow this post (as mentioned earlier) - you should be alright... http://www.xbox-360.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=7890

Was your's also the first models to come out in SA?.

Yup - bought shortly after launch... PGR3/Just Cause were my first two games. I'm just glad this happened before GTA IV and not after or, can you imagine, on launch day?!?!

I have got the 3 red lights on four occasions. Thing is, I bought my Xbox in Germany on the day after the European release. I phoned MI and said that they could do a swap out but because I bought the console outside of SA I would have to pay a R684 levy/handling fee. Also, I live in Cape Town so the cost of shipping my console to Bedfordview (where they are based) would be for my account. So this procedure is getting pretty expensive. Anyone had a similar incident or who can advise?
Just fyi I asked the consultant if I could pay the difference for an Elite and she said no.

Crap. So now I've just phoned MS and they want to confirm my address. I had to make up a UK address (for Live) and couldn't remember. They said I can phone back later with it.

Now I'm trying to login to Live (to get my made up UK address) through my browser, but the site is too slow.

AAargh!

Okay, I had an Aus box and had it replaced in October... Which I took to Bedforview (fortunately I live in JHB). No handling fees at all, so I don't know why they're asking you now. I can understand the shipping fees though.

 Oh dear, I better write that down!

Ok. Sorted. I got the reference number and they said my retailer will give me a new one.

They also said I just need to return the console (ie. I can keep all the cables, HDD, controller etc) :)

Just an update. I just spoke to MI Digital & the order has been raised for a brand new Elite to be sent to the CNA of my choice. I can take my dead Premium there, and pay the difference for the Elite...

Now I hope I can convince them to allow me a day with my current HDD. I'll buy a Memory Unit and hopefully be able to transfer all my saves etc. to the that, & then back to the Elite's HDD... cross your fingers for me...
