Hi folks
As you know MyADSL is continuing to grow which is great news for broadband users and consumers in South Africa. Unfortunately this growth means higher expenses and more work, but so far everything is still functioning smoothly. Here are a few practical issues regarding the running of the site.
1. MyADSL will soon have an international server where most of the larger downloads (podcasts, video material, PDF’s etc) will be hosted. This will allow us to make much more material available to members as BW limitations and costs will be much lower. The main site, blogs and podcast sites will still be in SA to ensure faster speeds and access after being capped (IS & DataPro customers).
2. Our CC registration is now completed and we will open a dedicated bank account and whatever else is needed soon. For MyADSL to act as a company will obviously incur some additional costs, but I think most members agree that it is better that MyADSL acts as a company and not in the name of an individual. We will also be able to give more accurate feedback regarding finances and other ‘company’ related matters. This will certainly not change anything about MyADSL and we will continue to be run by its members. You guys will therefore dictate the direction that we must take.
3. While we are on the topic of feedback and member governance, you help is needed with our advertising. Our advertising fees are low when compared to similar sites which mean that all our permanent advertising slots are booked out for months. As we are not in the business of making many for profit purposes we do not want to raise the fees, but this means many companies can never get a permanent slot on MyADSL. While we have a waiting list it might be a good idea to open one or two more slots and spend this money on another conference, prizes for our members or advertising MyADSL online or even in print. Can you please give your views on this matter?
4. Cara has informed me that Telkom has booked some advertising with us which might go live soon. This has been discussed and ‘approved’ by you guys a few months ago, but I just want to reiterate again that advertisers on MyADSL will never get any preferential treatment. They get exposure and we can pay our bills, that is it. We know that other forums or sites might protect advertisers from criticism or be given preferential treatment to protect revenue, but rest assured that MyADSL will never go down this path. The members make decisions on what happens here and I think most advertisers respect that.
There are a few more issues, but I will leave that for a later date. I don’t want to compete with LG regarding post length
Your feedback will be of great value as usual.
Regards,
RPM
