Hi folks

As you know MyADSL is continuing to grow which is great news for broadband users and consumers in South Africa. Unfortunately this growth means higher expenses and more work, but so far everything is still functioning smoothly. Here are a few practical issues regarding the running of the site.

1. MyADSL will soon have an international server where most of the larger downloads (podcasts, video material, PDF’s etc) will be hosted. This will allow us to make much more material available to members as BW limitations and costs will be much lower. The main site, blogs and podcast sites will still be in SA to ensure faster speeds and access after being capped (IS & DataPro customers).

2. Our CC registration is now completed and we will open a dedicated bank account and whatever else is needed soon. For MyADSL to act as a company will obviously incur some additional costs, but I think most members agree that it is better that MyADSL acts as a company and not in the name of an individual. We will also be able to give more accurate feedback regarding finances and other ‘company’ related matters. This will certainly not change anything about MyADSL and we will continue to be run by its members. You guys will therefore dictate the direction that we must take.

3. While we are on the topic of feedback and member governance, you help is needed with our advertising. Our advertising fees are low when compared to similar sites which mean that all our permanent advertising slots are booked out for months. As we are not in the business of making many for profit purposes we do not want to raise the fees, but this means many companies can never get a permanent slot on MyADSL. While we have a waiting list it might be a good idea to open one or two more slots and spend this money on another conference, prizes for our members or advertising MyADSL online or even in print. Can you please give your views on this matter?

4. Cara has informed me that Telkom has booked some advertising with us which might go live soon. This has been discussed and ‘approved’ by you guys a few months ago, but I just want to reiterate again that advertisers on MyADSL will never get any preferential treatment. They get exposure and we can pay our bills, that is it. We know that other forums or sites might protect advertisers from criticism or be given preferential treatment to protect revenue, but rest assured that MyADSL will never go down this path. The members make decisions on what happens here and I think most advertisers respect that.

There are a few more issues, but I will leave that for a later date. I don’t want to compete with LG regarding post length :D

Your feedback will be of great value as usual.

Regards,

RPM

Have you considered opening up a few more spots for advertising ie new spots on the page?
That is the feedback that I need...do you guys think it is a good idea?

Both ideas are good here, i.e. opening up one or two slots and advertising MyADSL in a print medium.

I also suggest that you create an "Advertisers" page that has a list of all the companies that advertise on the site. This means a little more exposure for advertisers while also giving users a way to find a company who's ad they may have seen on the front page. You could list a contact email address and a short description next to each entry.

rpm if you think more ads will help myadsl in any way then go for it. Personally I have configured my ad blocker to allow ads only for this site and I do actually check them out so more would be good.. this isn't like other sites that have massive epileptic flashing animated GIF's and the like that are annoying but has normal ads which don't take your attention away from what you are reading.

You could also start a MyADSL merchandising thingy and have stuff with funny catchphrases. Nothing would be cooler than a MyADSL brushed aluminium keyring bottle opener. Please get them out in time for summer cos a lot of bottles are gonna need opening in this heat.. k, thx :)

Hi Mad

Thanks a bunch for the feedback.

I had a look at these things a while ago, but the main problem is time and people to manage it. I am rather busy and Cara is also struggling to juggle work (she is also working at UJ), writing articles and doing the advertising. And then there are the numerous meetings and press briefings :( In December we might have some free time I hope and will then try to print a few shirts, keyholders etc.

RPM

Hahahaa! Suggestion: give MaD an equal placement for the Hellkom site, for every positional instance of Telkrap's advertising - preferably right next to each other, heeeheee...

I have no problem with adverts as long as they don’t dominate the pages, pop open windows all over the place or make noises.

I am glad to hear Telkom are interested in advertising here, it shows a change in how they perceive MyADSL.

I like this idea. There have been times when I have seen an ad and a week later wanted to contact them but been able to get the ad to load again

Yeah i agree with MAD.

Check out www.antitrust.co.za they are doing T-Shirts for ppl that contribute towards the cause.

We could do a whole range of products. I have the inside contacts for this and can help with the marketing and advertisements if need be. (free of course).
The contacts im talking about are mass producers for stores of the likes" Mr.Price,Woolworths etc."

Anyhow. Think caps with the logo and maybe kewl pic would sell like hot cakes......

Let me know RPM if you want details.....u have my email address

Hi Pookfuzz

Thanks for the feedback.

We do not allow any intrusive advertising! I personally think advertisers are better off with standard static banner ads anyway, and as Mad said it does not mess up the site.

I hope us "passive" members will have the option to contribute to the MyADSL bank balance. This is not about profit or non-profit. Due to circumstances it's not possible for a lot of us to be actively involved and MyADSL shouldn't be relient on sponsors and its "active" members alone to continue its excellent work

nd put them into a separate frame that is always visible
don't like the frame idea, just seems to get in the way (about.com does this).

Another idea would be to add another type of advert to the pages - so as not to slow-down rendering and loading, allow for a text-based advert [similar to Google adverts]...
Why not google adsense? they pay for each click that they get? the ads can be localized to south african companies only and are based on the content of the page so it is relevant

sourceforge has a similar system, where you can contribute to a project as a way of saying thanks. the only benefit the user gets is a little logo next there name showing they contribute to projects.

How about a PayPal Donate button? Lots of international folks read this site too.

Brilliant, let Telkom advertise here. It will act as proof and a friendly reminder of what we are fighting for.

Little logo not needed here IMO, as that opens up another can of worms. If I contribute, the evidence only has to show up on the MyADSL bank balance and nowhere else.

Hi Mad

Currently we are able to cover our costs, which make donations unnecessary. The best thing members can do is to visit the site and read the news. If they have time to become involved in the forum discussions and give their experiences it is even better.

I think members sometimes underestimate the influence they have by simply giving their views here. Whenever I have meetings with providers they quote you guys and see how they can improve their service according to your feedback. And the more people that visit MyADSL, the more the providers will listen.

RPM
