Kind of defeats the purpose of a smart phone if it doesn't have always on internet. Whatsapp for example wouldn't function as an SMS replacement, but an instant messenger.
 
Agreed, but stuff like only turning on data every hour to sync etc is headed down the same path. Someone will WhatsApp you and then you'll only get it maybe an hour later.

I've turned sync off on everything. Will download my mail and stuff when I feel like it because it's not that important. WhatsApp messages can be important so I need it to be realtime.
 
1. Root phone
2. Remove bloatware
3. Install a kernel which supports undervolting - today's phones are overpowered and often you don't need ask that power
4. Get rid if apps that supposedly save battery life - often they consume the very power you are trying to save
5. Use darker themes and backgrounds - the screen sucks the most power
6. Switch off fancy features you never use - only switch it on to show Apple fanboyz what they don't have
7. Reduce screen brightness - the screen sucks the most power
8. Use GPS only when required - one of the biggest drainers after the screen

Note I mentioned nothing about switching off connectivity - I agree that it takes away from being a smartphone.

That is all I did with my phone and can now easily get more than a day's uptime with moderate to heavy usage.

Thats so 2010. When 2.* left GPS running.

Android, from 3.2 days turn off GPS when its not in use. ie: will only turn on when app needs it, and it even adjust usage based on the fact that you walking/driving or simply sitting still.
 
I have an S3 running CM 10.1 with wifi or mobile data always on, and battery life is excellent. My battery stats app tells me my phone lasts 16 hours and 57 minutes on average between charges.

True, but something like location services or Facebook will use the GPS to drain the battery. It's easier to turn off the GPS, than wonder which app is actually using it...
 
I find that installing an automation app like Tasker can sometimes help your battery a bit, although some might argue that Tasker takes a bit of battery power itself.

Right now, I have tasker turn on the GPS when I access apps that need it (such as maps, navigation etc).

Also if your rom supports it you can enable 3G and data every 5 min or so (much like juice defender does, but here you have more control). You can also enable 3G for browsing and then perhaps switch to 2G when your phone is idle.

I still think this is quite possibly the best app ever made for android! The possibilities are endless.
 
According to gsmarena my S4 has a standby time of 2 weeks. Using the same ratio of actual:rated that means that nokia will last about 3 days :p

Think it's when only using GSM and 2G + 3G radios disabled.

My S2 does actually last two weeks without 2G & 3G radios enabled.

That's pretty decent. If your phone's battery lasts 2 days, you should have spent your money on something else because you clearly don't use it.

The last time I had one that lasted more than a day was the old Sony Erricson W810
 
Lol yeah. Don't understand how some people go 2 days... I leave wifi and data on and actually use my phone so I'm pretty happy when it still has power by the time I get home. My coworker who takes taxis obviously has more time to fiddle on his phone etc so charges it while at work as well.
 
I've also noticed that my battery runs out very quickly lately.
When I'm on shift, depending on how much I chat (Whatsapp) I can last BARELY 12 hours... It's frustrating.

What phone? Stock firmware? Some phones support significantly larger third party batteries. I've seen a battery for the S3 that was over 5000mAh.

Also don't install games that run in the back ground just realised why my battery is been running down latley
