MyBB guide to quitting smoking

Ok heres my story:

Smoked for 10 odd years, quit for 4 years and fall off the horse and started again. Fortunately enough I quickly realised what an absolute retard I was for putting a cig back in my mouth.

I used stress as an excuse, but what a poor excuse as starting again in fact put even more stress on me.

I decided that I ruined something good and was determined to quit. Luckily I had only been back on 20 a day for about 2 months so I hadn't left it for another 10 years.

I saw my doc which prescribed a new drug called Champix and let me tell you it works. It suppresses the urge to smoke considerably and helps you in the initial phase of your quit.

The first time I quit I was on Zyban and let me tell you that stuff is the devils chewing gum, so weird stuff happened to me on that stuff. It really did help though, but I was frightened to death on the stuff.

My old man had a minor stroke last week and the doc basically told him if he doesn't quit he will die. So I am trying my best to get him on Champix with the hope he will quit.

Bottom line is you really have to want to quit and be determined and you will do it!

The drugs are not a miracle, they just help you through the withdraws and allow you to cope better.

I would really encourage anyone really keen to kick the habit for good to consult your Dr and try out Champix, they really do work and coupled with determination you CAN quit.

I have now not smoked for close on a week, not much yeah, but I will never touch another cigarette, cigar, cigarillo, hubbly or any other form of smoking paraphernalia, ever again :)

I hope this encourages at least one other person to consider the options and quit. It really is rewarding beyond words.
Nice post Grimspoon - I foresee many quitters from this :)

Smoked since I was 13. I’m now 57. Never stopped, never had health problems. I love it. You always have a light for the braai while all the non smokers pat their pockets and look sheepish.

Thats good to know. Hope you can go through life smoking and not have any problems! :)

Today is the 2nd day of going cold turkey for me... back at work so it's especially tempting to go out for one of my regular smoke breaks... :/

Going on a full detox so gonna cut back on drinking and eating unhealthy as well... hopefully at least 1 of these things should stick.

Good for you mate. Keep it up! Just stick with it, it really is worth it!

Its that damn tenant! Tell him to gtfo! LOL

Haha, tell me about it! He is on his way out soon.

Well I hope it helps at least one person to quit. That will be good enough for me :)

You can do it chaps, seriously. Mind of matter. Its hard yeah, but the rewards at the end of the day are incalculable.

What helped me was the thought of having a smoke and thinking "wtf am I actually doing? I am not even enjoying this"

You have to bring yourself back to those moments when you are absolutely disgusted with the smoke and can't figure out why you even doing it.

Obviously when you quit, all you can think of is that first rush, the first drag, but by the end of the smoke where are you? No where really.

Sounds weird, but its just a mindset you have to try adopt.

Another mind set you have to adopt and I think a lot of people make this mistake, they say "I am going to try quit from xxxx date" Big no no. You have already set yourself up for failure with the "I will try"

You have to convince yourself and say "I WILL quit on xxxx date no matter what!"

wow congrats to you guys, i want to quit for my health but at the same time don't want to if you know what i mean.

Indeed, I love it and hate it

sheesh .. almost done with day 2 of Cold Turkey Quitting (CTQ)... and I am struggling big time... got the shakes... feeling nauseous .. headache approaching...

Think my best course of action would be to go home, get into bed and try to sleep through the cravings. O.o

Good on ya, try keep it up.

That's where the Champix helps, with these terrible side effects of quitting. But hang in there, a few days and you will be feeling better and on your way to freedom :p

Stay strong the first 2 days are the hardest!

Just remind yourself there is nothing to be gained from having a ciggie now and later on if you want to quit again you will have to struggle through all this again. Just quit now and get it over with.

i have given up smoking now for 2 weeks ...i also went cold turkey ...i guess being muslim helps cos we fasting and cannot smoke during the day...i did it last year as well for 3 months and started again ....

been smoking for about 9 years ...i knows its not that long but im trying earlier than later

i guess its not that easy cos its more you get problems that are in the mind ....

OK... currently on Day 4 of CTQ (Cold Turkey Quitting)... took the day off yesterday, so it was easier to stay away from the cigs... spent the whole day in bed watching series. Funnily the first few days, all I could think of was just getting through this so that I could have my first smoke O.o, but now the cravings are not as strong... first major test will be Friday night though (after work drinks session)....

Well done dude! That takes a lot of strength to get where you are. Just think that if you smoke its all ruined and you have to start the fight again.

Before you know it, it will be 4 weeks, then 4 months, then 4 years :)

Congratulations to all the peeps trying to make a positive change in their lives! Well done

Wow... the difference between day 2 and day 4 is amazing... cravings have almost completely gone... went from a pack a day to zero... and still going strong :)

Day 5 and going strong :) It's strange how much of a difference it makes to post my progress on these forums as well... it's almost like an added motivation to stick to it, now that I have committed it to the forum :)
