I've smoked for 11 years now and I just don't have the guts to quit....so sad :(

Initially its not easy to make the decision, but once it is made and you lead up to your quit date you will get excited.

If you do decide to quit, I would recommend trying Champix. It gives you 2 weeks to take the meds and then you quit. Withdrawals are minimal and it comes down to strength and will power.

It can be done! :)

If I have the money in future for Champix, I'll try to give it a go.

Regarding will power. As Allan Carr said in his quit smoking book. A smoker will stand in freezing snow or rain to have a drag, so we are definitely not short on will power :D ;) :p

I've been smoking since my first year at university which is 16 years ago... up till 5 days ago, I was smoking a pack a day. Granted, it's only been 5 days... but it's actually not as difficult as you may think.

...so what cigars are good ones to start with ?

Its not to expensive, I think the first 2 weeks is R200, and R350 for a month. Personally I don't think 12 weeks is necessary. I would say 1 month and thats it.

Hahaha, thats a good quote :p

Smoked for 17 years (between 30 to 40 a day) - quit about 5 weeks ago with the aid of champix. The decision was a combination of my partner constantly moaning about the smell and the finances involved. Have never had any smoking related illnesses and like Palemino actually like smoking. Champix only helped a little bit though. Suffered extreme withdrawal (headaches, nausea, shakes etc...). These have subsided now. Been using popcorn as a low kilojoule placebo (keep my hands and mouth busy during the day)

Congrats! I wasn't aware that Champix had been around for that long? My Dr said it was new on the market.

LOL - unlike many others I didn't have any smoking side effects - my lung capacity is still more than a non smoker :p

Yeah I also never experienced any issues. Problem is most of the diseases related to smoking are silent killers.

My dad's stroke was attributed to smoking and he felt 100%. In fact he had to have a lung function test when they admitted him and he sitting on something like 110% :p

But even though his lungs are ok, his main arteries have taken a MASSIVE hammering from the smoking. His carotid artery (main one in your neck to your brain) is 40% blocked :(

Same here and I run at least 40km a week.

Its been a little more than 2 weeks since my last cigarette and my first time I did exercise this month, I was sick, but felt great running today.

But isn't that cholestrol related? How does smoking cause that artery to get blocked?

To the best of my medical knowledge, smoking causes hardening of the arteries. This hardening creates a build up of what is called plaque in the arteries.

This plaque can break off in chunks and flows through the blood and gets stuck in the veins / arteries and that is what causes the stroke. Basically the plaque blocks the artery and stops the flow of blood to the brain.

Luckily in my old mans case, the plaque that got stuck in his carotid artery was small enough that it managed to break free and thus he only had a what is TIA, and not a full blown stroke, which often enough leaves the victim paralyzed or even brain dead. :(

After the doc fixed my fingers after i gave them a bit of a trim she told me smoking will restrict the amount of blood getting to them from hardening or whatever and the likelyhood of the ends going a bit funky were so high it was best i stop which I promptly did
