MyBB guide to quitting smoking

Puff the &*%*$ outta that e-cig, cycle like a nutta, post a dozen times a minute on MBB, do whatev helps to reduce those withdrawals, just stay strong, DJ. Can't let those health-destroyers keep on forcing you to stuff up your body and your finances :D

You are sadly mistaken dude. While I agree that you'll always have a slight craving it does not overwelm or 'grab' you.
Its only in the first couple of weeks after you quit where you become irritable, anxious, short tempered etc.Once the nicotin is out of you system the negative effects of quitting can be easily controlled.
After a while your desire to smoke is no more different than the need for a glass of ice cold coke on a hot day.The thought of having one is nice but you won't go crazy if you can't have it.

I cannot really argue but i find that not to to be the case, if it was people could easily quit. If it was the case people would not start again after 3-18 months and so on. I don't think it is an exact science for everyone. After two weeks some people are fine, after two years some people are struggling. People think nicotine only affects our bodies they don't realize it changes our brain and our bodies need to reconfigure the brain and that can cause symptoms for months and even years after your last cigi. As i said it's not an exact science and everyone is different.

You can do it dj :D.

I agree that is affects different people in different ways but the first few weeks are the most difficult.Beyond that, it is possible to find ways to suppress the craving which at this point is largely psychological.

This thread, combined with potential health issues has motivated me to quit smoking. I'm on day three this morning and too am really struggling. The mornings are the most difficult for me and I find my withdrawals lasting for up to an hour. I've got cold sweats, what feels like hot flushes, shaking a bit and the worst bit is knowing that I want a cigarette and how easily I could "fix" this.

On the plus side though, I haven't had an asthma attack since I stopped which is unusual for me. I've recently started cycling and rowing again which is helping too.

I can't take most of the quitting meds as I'm on anti-depressants, so I guess it's gonna have to be the natural struggle for me. I've been smoking for 13 years, at least a pack a day of Kent/B&H Special Mild. Let's hope there's no falling off the railings.

Edit: I do have a rather schitty e-cig which I puff on when I cannot take the cravings any longer...:o

you go you good thing.
Dude hit that ecig hard or consider getting a better quality one. I would very strongly recommend getting some extra high concentration juice for it because that will make all the difference.

Do you want to get off cigi's or nicotine dj? Won't consuming nicotine just keep the cravings going rocket?

I find it is better to just go cold turkey struggle for 3 weeks and prey your body gets over it quickly, for me after those 3 weeks i no longer crave the cigi but i am like a bear with sore tooth 24/7.

I've practically made it through today (thanks for the support guys) but now comes the really tough part - the weekend. I have a pretty full weekend planned and it will inevitably involve booze, and that's gonna be the real tester.

The problem with my e-cig is that they've discontinued this brand so I can't get new cartridges, and the cartridges I have are in bad shape. I also don't want to buy a new one because I don't want to be reliant on nicotine any longer. I want off for good.

Oh well. I'm motivated to stay cigarette-free this weekend. If I can get through this then I'm home free. Good luck to the rest of you quitters too...

Day 5 for me. Yesterday was great. This morning & afternoon terrible. Grumpy and irritable and my throat is sore. A bit better now.

The cravings no longer "consume" me, I have it mostly under control except from the occasional short, but severe crave, almost like a mental flash image of smoking. Usually triggered by coffee, finishing a meal etc.

I know I'm not there yet, but I'm feeling very positive vs previous attempts - this one is cold turkey and I managed to break the smoke/alcohol link, which was my undoing with previous attempts.

Good luck dj...stick it out. :-)

Oh and I'm extremely snappy and I have a sharp tongue at the best of times. Not a single person came into my office today - they all emailed or called me. I'm literally one floor above them. Lol. I think they made a smart decision tbh. I walked out of this morning's meeting because of how irate people were getting me...

I had that feeling about a week ago.I felt like Hulk's illegitimate ADHD son high on PCP.I just wanted to smash and swear.I just hopped on the exercise cycle and the feeling quickly passed.

Yup just be very careful with alcohol, you may seem strong before you drink but we know alcohol can break down anyone's will so if you do drink take it easy because it won't be long before you will focusing on the cherries if you drink too much and from there it won't be much longer than a few minutes before you crack. Also i wanted to ask, what did you eat today? when i quit i found i would freak out far less if i had eaten something of substance. Empty tummy plus nicotine craving = person about to lose control.

So drink in moderation so you can maintain control :p

Well yeah you want to get away from all nicotene in the end. The electronic one just means the process takes a bit longer but its tons easier to get through and feels more likely to work for me.
Im on 2 months today.Using the elec one every now and then when I feel a bit of a crave but could also comfortably stop that now.

I caved this weekend after a few drinks. Unfortunately my e-ciggy broke on Saturday morning but I dealt with the cravings until I started drinking that night. Had about 5 smokes on Saturday.

I've now restarted the quitting cycle as of yesterday, so let's see how it goes this week without an e-ciggy and using willpower alone. I've decided to quit drinking for the foreseeable future too...

Ditto here. Started drinking with friends during the rugby, had 3 cigarettes. Funny thing, I'm having almost no cravings today.

I was clean for 3 weeks and then had a few cigs while out drinking with my pals. All went downhill from there. (back to a pack a day :/).. so stay strong guys and be careful.. don't make the same mistake I did and convince yourself that having a few smokes while drinking is ok.

wow, you guys give me hope.
I've been trying for a couple of years (on and off) to stop.

I sometimes stop for a week, sometimes for a month,
But always "fall" during a braai/party/wedding when drinks are involved.

Agree 100% with KingBbel.
Booze doen't help.

lolz Still overly cynical and sarcastic - 5 weeks+
Smelled a cigarette when i walked past the smokers today, craved a little.

You gotta wire your brain to hate it. What i did and it drove my friends and family crazy is put down smoking and talked about how bad it is and how crap it smelt daily.

It drove them mad but it got to the point where i could drink and be around smokers without many issues. It never solved the 13 month freak out in an instant anger issue though sadly. Worst 13 months of my life.

Damn all the money grabbers. Went into a pharmacy today to get some Champix. Schedule 5 drug and I need a perscription. No worries, phone my son's Doctor for a script. Went something like this.

Them: Are you a patient of our ?
Me: No, I don't have a doctor, my wife and son are patients of yours.
Them: Then you have to come in for a consult.
Me: How long and how much ?
Them: About 10 to 15 mins, and standard consult fee of R300
Me: Are you out of your #$@@# tree.
Them: *click*

Anyone know a 'good' doc who will give scripts without a consult ?

I went to see a Dr Zipp in Randburg who does a neat trick with some needles in your ears that stimulate nerve clusters that take care of the addiction. Well worth it for cutting the physical craving immediately, and drug free.

Acupunture ? mmm quite a few Chinese docs in Seapoint do this, might be worth my while to look into it.
