While lying in hospital this week with my second acute pancreatitis attack I was wondering how many others on MyBB are also part of the club.

Had my first acute attack on 16 June 2014 that nearly killed me (I was hours away from death), changed my lifestyle but sadly ended back in hospital on Saturday night. This one was not as sever but its still not a joke.

Sadly another patient who was admitted last week passed away Saturday. Also my in-laws lost someone to pancreatitis.

Not nice, hope you recover soon.

I don't know anybody who's had it but will follow this thread with interest. Do you know what caused it?

Well we have ticked off alcohol since I stopped drinking after my first attack and scorpion bites. That leaves another 27 possible causes. Going for more tests on Tuesday.

What are the symptoms, what are you experiencing?

My father had a pancreatic cyst removed in his 50's.

Its starts off as heart burn that just won't go away. Your whole abdomen begins to hurt and you start to struggle to breath. You will also suffer lower back ache.

This all happens within hours, even just minutes. My first attack took less than 15 minutes from first symptoms to me being rushed to the hospital thinking it was a heart attack. My second attack was much slower and but I realised quickly there was trouble brewing within 3 hours as the heart burn went from discomfort to me wanting to reach for the ENO's.

There are a lot of symptoms that start weeks ahead. I've found lack of energy and unexplained lower back ache - the pain is from your organs. Another common symptom is sudden weight loss, in my case its sudden weight gain which is rare. With my first attack I had heart burn every evening at 6pm for about a minute for the week leading up to the attack.

If left untreated, acute pancreatitis can kill you quickly. In my first attack the difference between life and death was hours and thats why getting correct medical treatment is essential. Had I waited an hour I would have ended up in ICU with possible organ failure. Took me 6 months to recover.

Continuous attacks can lead to chronic pancreatitis with a high probability of pancreatic cancer. One of the worst and deadliest cancers.

Treatment consists of pain killers (often morphine), drips and nothing through the mouth to give the pancreas a chance to rest. Hospitalisation is quiet long as there is continuous monitoring of the patient often as every hour for the first few days. Some patients can stay for weeks in hospital. You are often booked off at least a week to stay at home, I'm only returning to work next week Wednesday at the earliest and typing this before I take my next round of pain killers.

Long term recovery involves a low fat diet and abstaining from alcohol. An absolute lifestyle change but worth it.

Thanks, useful to know. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that.

My brother also has pacreatitis. He was hours away from death, about six years ago. He had a major op in Nov 015, and is slowly recovering. He's always been a teetotaller, which his doctors initially found hard to believe.

Whenever I remember him, I'll remember you, and wish you a speedy recovery.

Hey OP. I also struggle with chronic pancreatitis cause of a auto immune disease called Sjorgens syndrome. Since starting to use Nutricology's lamb and pork pancreas pills I haven't had it in months! Its expensive but worth it.http://www.nutricology.com/pancreas-pork-natural-glandular-720-caps

You have to import it though...its not available locally

I believe someone at work had it along with gallbladder(stones) problems this year. Now he is back in hospital last night. They thought it could be a heart attack but when they did a scan they couldn't see his heart due to an infection :(

Mmm... Maybe I should take my heartburn more seriously.

When it gets particularly bad my chest pains, especially on the back and shoulders and can be like that for days. I struggle to swallow as extreme pain, discomfort and feeling of something being stuck is experienced. I can't do heavy exercise as I'm bound to feel nauseous and painful heartburn.

Doubt it's got anything to do with this, but who knows?

Anything to prevent or is it just luck of draw(without outrageous lifestyle) who gets like cancer?

For the majority of males its caused by alcohol. For the minority the underlying cause is unknown as in my case as its genetic.

Since my original post I've seen a specialist at Tygerberg Hospital (Dr S Hofmeyr) and he indicated that sludge on my gallbladder was triggering the pancreatitis. Now the next question is what is causing this sludge?

And since my lifestyle has excluded alcohol and I'm on a healthy eating plan which I mostly stick to, there was nothing in my lifestyle that was the cause. The only solution is for me to have my gallbladder removed and there is a good possibility that I won't have another attack.

So since we don't know the actual trigger, removing the gallbladder breaks the cycle.

Keeping my gallbladder just puts me at a higher risk and I was given the option. Since I'm used to watching what I eat its not going to be a major issue to have it done as I'm already on a low fat diet.

I use to have terrible heart burn 8 years ago and suspected it was pancreatitis. The specialist assured me it was not. Was more just being overweight (I was 100+kg and my ideal weight is in the 70's.)

Also look at diet. Downing pies in your 30's is not the same as in your 20's. Now that I'm in my 40's I get heartburn looking at pies ;)

Ouch. But the good thing about stones is that they are easily detected and treated. Hope is OK.

My problem is that I have sludge which is often not detected and is more dangerous because of this.

Women usually get gallbladder stones instead of pancreatitis so the two are related to a degree. But thank goodness for modern medical science. Also a change in eating habits is required by switching to low fat control diet. This does not mean you cannot enjoy your food (I still eat take away burgers and steaks) but its just learning how to do things in moderation.
