I'm looking at the MyChoice 300 tariff from MTNSP. I have to admit it looks great. This is what the salesman explained (could be wrong, but that's where you guys come in):

- R329-00 per month (including Caller ID and Itemised billing)
- R300 airtime per month (usable for voice, text or data, as you wish)
- Once you reach your R300 limit, you are billed for the excess
- One can bolt on SMS bundles (200 SMS bundle for +/- R50 pm; out-of-bundle SMS's are R0.30)

Does this sound correct? It seems like a REALLY good deal to me, especially since you get phones similar to the ProCall contracts!

What contracts are you all on (in the same price range), and why did you choose them? At present, I'm spending approximately R500-00 pm on a Weekender Everyday Package (with Vodacom). I figure I'll get more bang-for-my-buck on a Top-Up type contract, but Vodacom's Top-Up contracts only offer low-end phones, but MTNs MyChoice contracts offer a great alternative to the normal top-up setup.

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say it depends on your usage, MTN ProCall 120 @ +-R290 gets you a good phone with 2hours anytime minutes, but if you don't really phone a lot during peak it might not be too worthwhile...
Check out CellC too for top-up contracts, i do know they give you more for what you pay for (R300 gives you R350 with 100sms) http://www.cellc.co.za/content/contract/controlchat300.asp ,however dont think they give the best phones and i'd personally stick with MTN or Voda

The big attraction of the top-up-like contracts is the included airtime, which means my usage is included in the price (to a certain extent). While the ProCall 120 includes 120 anytime minutes, every SMS and data session costs extra. The MyChoice seems to offer the best of both worlds: great phones at great value

true, go for MTN with their MyChoice packages then and try get it through MTN SP as they offer the best phones on their packages (i.e lowest pay-ins on more expensive phones or even free)

Yup. Currently, they have the W960i for R299 on a 24 month MyChoice 300 contract!

haha yeah chances, i just got that phone through them! go for it dude its a awesome phone (just update the firmware through sony update service to the new one, its a lot better:D)

I've been waiting for a good deal on this phone for about 9 months (the first 6 of which were spent waiting for the phone to actually come out). I think I'll try get there tomorrow to organise the paperwork for the number port.

So the phone's treating you well? Any pitfalls I should know about? What does the new firmware do?

Just be aware that you cannot use the airtime to convert to data bundles etc. If you want to buy a data bundle it will be added on top of your monthly fee.

But I can use the airtime for out-of-bundle-rated data, right? i.e. R300 worth of R2.00 / MB data

Yes, you can. In fact that's what I'm doing with my Topup 75. I phone very occasionally, and if you use it to only browse via the phone it can last for quite some time.

Great!

No hassles with the phone, battery life could be better for such a powerful phone though (apparantly the p1 has a better batter:confused:) but i get a good two days with moderate use, obviously 3G plays big part so its all dependant...the phone is also kinda slow to open apps and menus however its fast once they just stay open in the task menu, however I updated the firmware yesterday and there was a noticeable speed increase:D

The new firmware also comes with a added game (EA's SSX3 snowboarding, looks super good on with the 3D engine)..not sure what other tweaks there are on the new firmware yet as i haven't had time to mess about:p

Snag #1:
Although I was under the impression that I could get forms faxed to me to apply, I actually have to fill in the forms in-store... Irritation

Snag #2:
They don't want to give me the phone at that price. Apparently the "E&OE" at the bottom is more powerful than their consultant's quote?

what do they want to charge you? if i may ask ... i mean you are going to be paying R325 pm

Quote from consultant: R299-00

First price from MTN store today: R1799-00
After explaining what happened at other store: R1349-00

How can the price change in 3 mins?
