Gmail anybody?

For mickey-mouse stuff sure, but if you really want to rely on
your email account you should have a paid provider, or an ISP
where you get your internet access. A hosted domain is best
as this can stay with you for life.

Personally I cannot understand how any person can even think of using anything but GMAIL.

Sure... use a normal mail account if you like downloading tons of spam and paying for it... I am not even talking about the R29 yet.

1. Gmail does not delete your email even if you delete it.
2. Gmail scans your email for adwords.
3. Gmail compromises your privacy and everyone else who sends you email.
4. Gmail is free and anyone can get as many accounts as they want.
5. Gmail is free and so if anything happens, eg they delete your account because they suspect you of spamming, you have nothing to fight them with.
6. Gmail is free so their customer support is pretty bad.
7. Gmail is free and looks bad if you're a business or use the account for professional reasons. Privacy concerns compound this problem.
8. A non-free account just looks more professional or trustworthy.
9. Google is a huge corporate entity like Microsoft. Believing they are anything but that is naive.

1. You can have your own domain set on gmail -non free set up, infact there is a free version of this too combined with gdocs etc.(non business)
-some universities and smaller companies have done just this, i read an article about it a while back.

2. paid for version offers better support and more storage backup etc

The MaxiSave accounts include 300MB bandwidth free each month and include an optional email address for R29/month. The company says that this will become an obligatory charge as the service extends.

"Buy an email account from us for R29 and get 300MB free. Oh, and any extra bandwidth you use is 50% higher than most other ISPs. Oh, and, of course, Telkom will be charging you an arm and a leg for the copper..."

If they market this as "free internet" the ASA will have a field day.

I admit for people on a budget it's good but for anyone considering email seriously, a paid provider even at $29 per year is worthwhile. For $5 per month you can have a few GB of storage and a website too (incl domain).
ISP email is paid email so its better IMO.

ISP email is paid email so its better IMO.

The only secure email, or most secure email (only I'll really trust) is self hosted e-mail. But for home use that's pretty much over kill. Gmail is nice, wont advice it for Military companies, but Bob the builder can get away with using it if u know what I'm saying.

Google Apps offers free hosting with domain costing $10 per year. The email facility offers the same storage capacity as a normal Gmail account.
