What can be considered a good signal strength on MySignal?

20+ ? IMO, good S-N-L is much more important than signal strength for a favourable MyWi experience
Hi Luke

Thanks for the feedback. And what would a good SNL be?

Think anything from 10 up is ok. Proasm and guys like bdt might have more accurate figures. Mine hovers somewhere between 9 and 14 (when I bother to check, since it sits on the router and not on usb) with a normal patch antenna parking on the table.

Any SNL (Signal to Noise Level) is better than none.
In many cases people have good signal strength but cannot logon, or get disconnected for no apparent reason etc, and this is because of interference in their area.
Outside interference is probably our biggest enemy at this stage and the same goes for any wireless operator out there.
20 is about the best you can expect under lab conditions, but in practice 17 is tops.

In general if you take 0% signal as the "noise floor" (no interference) then a signal strength of 10% cannot realise a better SNL than 10dBm, therefore in theory you need 18% or greater signal strength before you can start realising good SNL's.

I currently have a 11 SNL with a 21% signal. By the look of things it is not too shabby, but I will see if I can improve on this with a few alterations :D

Any external (outside the house) antennas connected ? If not, that's pretty good as is. Not much (if any) to gain re. quality of service by the intended alterations

Yeah as Luke says, 21% with 11 SNL is great.
I get that with my antenna removed which is most the time these days with the storms etc, with it connected I get 46% signal and 16 SNL.

The new MW Dish is lying on the floor at this stage (in a sweet spot though), and I am getting a cool 36% signal strength and 17 SNL! Will mount it when I have time and see if it gets much better than this…

You're close to the tower ? If I take my modem, patch antenna and the wife's laptop for a stroll outside, I get more or less the same (39 & 17). 300m from the tower, thru the neighbour's trees

2.5 km from the tower, but can see it out of my office window.

With the current antenna radiation patterns the ideal position from a tower is 2 to 3 km provided the terrain is fairly flat.
500 meters or closer the chances are you will receive a signal from a neighboring tower.

Hi ProASM

Is there an easy way to ensure that the dish is in the optimal position (apart from trial and error)?

Oops sorry, I dont come around here much these days :)
Just tune for max SNL, otherwise its very much of a 'trial n error' situation, as its quite possible you get a bounce signal from someplace which in many cases is better than the direct signal.
