No, it's R150 for a single cable; the R300 was for two cables. Also, from the pictures, it isn't just a piece of wire; there's a boxy dongle thing near the one end, which might contain some complex circuitry. (USB and Ethernet are fairly different technologies, so I'd imagine it's a bit more complex than just hooking the wires up to an RJ-45 connector; please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Correct: R150 per cable...

That is correct. Little box with a multi colour LED in near the end that goes into the modem.

Go to Nokia, and ask why a Nokia data cable costs R700.

I don't have to - I have a Siemens, and it *came* with a cable.

quote:
because the Nokia cable's got circuitry in the plug...mind you, the same circuit can be built for a fraction of the cost.

So? I did eventually get a second Siemens cable - and it was R300 from Siemens. Nokia is ripping people off.

Siemens AND Nokia are ripping people off.

R300 for a cable is also crazy

Very true. Fortunately the Siemens phones come with a cable...

Or get a Sony Erricson and never use a cable again... (Bluetooth AND IRDA) [:D]

I could do that - but then I'd have to buy a Bluetooth dongle or IR adapter for the PC. Cable works just fine (and the USB cable, which was the R300 one I bought, recharges the phone too).

guys guys, are we off topic or what?.:)

now, seriously, I have just gotten that ethernet cable, and happily plugged it into a router WAN port, and nothing, zero, no lights, no action (nor cameras).

I need some advice, I was thinking maybe a crossover would be needed, as I can plug the MyWireless cable directly into my PC's NIC and it lights up. (the cable has an indicator light on it).

I tried plugging it into the LAN ports on the router, and still nothing lights up.

I am baffled....anyway I am going to try with a crossover connector.

any pointers?
Thanks
Clive

Did you have the modem plugged in with the USB cable before? Just reset the modem before changing the cables.

What router are you using? Some routers has multiple PPPoE config sets.

Maybe someone could post a pic or 2?

A great help would be if the colours of wires etc could be identified and the order in which they appear?

Maybe any printing on the side of the cable?

Thanx

Herbs,it's a propriatory (sp?) cable. With a flat connector on one end and a widget in the middle with and LED indicatoron it. Don't think posting the colours of the wires in the RJ-45 is going to help much.

Maybe we could have a whip-round for the R150 to sacrifice one and open the sucker up?

Privet, you sure the WAN port on your router is up? And it's not hardwired as a crossover?

Wel... mine is not connected to a router. It is directly connected to the 2nd NIC on my firewall.

I was able to borrow a "wireless router" from a friend. Will test it tonight...

I tried to get the modem going with a "gigabyte wireless broadband router". No luck... the "connect" LED on the modem does not even go on. And the router's log just says "PPPoE session begin"...

i am missing something , i can't get my modem working with linux and ppoe and all that ...

i'll be the 1st to admit i don't know what i am doing :P
so what happned to those howto's ??

1st tried freebsd, withh it's buildt in pppoe.
gave up on that, kicked the pc, then tried redhat with

18.4.2 Setting up ppp.conf

Here is an example of a working ppp.conf:

default:
set log Phase tun command # you can add more detailed logging if you wish
set ifaddr 10.0.0.1/0 10.0.0.2/0

name_of_service_provider:
set device PPPoE:xl1 # replace xl1 with your ethernet device
set authname YOURLOGINNAME
set authkey YOURPASSWORD
set dial
set login
add default HISADDR

18.4.3 Running PPP

As root, you can run:

# ppp -ddial name_of_service_provider

thnx for the reply.

for free bsd , my config looked pretty my exactly like that ;)
i used the freebsd handbook as a reference.

I got the same errors with the modem unplugged as with it plugged in.
i don't have the logs anymore ;(
but it would be something like
dial -> carrier
disconnected
connected for 5 seconds 0 octets sent 0 octets recived.
((fuzzy memory here))

(i did turn the modem off and on again, both the nics in my pc work, i can use both of them to ping my other pc)

some on plz tell me what stupid i am doing ^_^

This FreeBSD thing, is it used on a seperate machine? or on your normal machine?? (scuse the stupid question but this bsd thing is all very new!)
