MyWireless, Ethernet, Linux

freeBsd another operating system.
i chose it because i knew it had pppoe support built into it.
to be perfectly honest , i am not sure whats all different :P
but it isn't quite unix or linux :P feels pretty similare to me :P

but ... GOD DAMMIT, it didn't work for me.
using it in another old pc, with two network cards, that kinda setup.
one nic serving the modem , the other the connection to the LAN.

but ... sigh, it's like it never see's the modem.
the connect like just blinks and nothing recived or sent.
and i never used free bsd before, so i am not really sure what i am doing :P

hmmmm... BSD etc... would not be able to help you with that, sorry. My firewall is an RedHat 6.2 installation. The newer distro's has pppoe shipped with it, as I understand.

Here is what I did: http://www.privet.co.za/pppoe.html

Thanx privet !
i did try redhat 9, and it came with roaring pengiun pre installed.
and from what i can see, i did the exact same as u. i got errors as well, again like it never saw the modem, same errors plugged in or unplugged.

dumb question , when u say reset the modem, u mean the button on the front right ? (cause i did that, but i see there are some contacts on the circutry on the back with the word "reset" i havn't touched that :P yet :P

thanx for the help again !!!
i will try once more with redhat before i try bsd again.
(kinda like proof of concept i guess)

Are you able to do a plain standard PPP dialup?

yup- that is button that I am talking about.

i don't have a modem to try atm. ;(

but i am sure i am missing something simple.
anyway, gonna go break it some more now. X_X

WHAT? how the hell is it going to work without the modem, I'm seriously lost now.

Rhino: Its a 128/256/512k service, the NIC is not going to make the slightest difference except 0.2ms latency. USB vs Ethernet wont effect the transfer rate either, just latency. Using a gigabit nic on a 128k uplink is really just stupid.

O I C, cos I got the gigabit card story from Megawan a few months ago, they said it was a must, But I think they where just trying 2screw me for a quick R750...

mvh, have you activated your account yet?

We ran into problems trying to activate the account under linux with pppoe (possibly since we don't know the new_user password?)
After installing the modem on a Windows box and running through the whole registration process we plugged back the pppoe cable, reconnected to the linux box and it just worked. Was as simple as that.

misunder standing, i was asked if i can do normal ppp.
said i didn't have a dial up modem for that.

I have a modem , account been active for ... 3 weeks now, been using it happily ;)

just not very experienced with linux :P so having problems setting it up.

um.... ok briefly , this is all i did with redhat 9.

1. install redhat with the stuff i need.
2. adsl-start, adsl-setup are all there allready.
3. adsl-setup, run it and answer all those questions, just like privet.
4. turnoff modem , plug in eithernet, turn on modem.
5. (check ligh in nic is on, light on cable is on)
6. adsl-start, or ifup ppp0, but get time out error(s) waiting for PADO packets (or something like that)

so i am guessing i did something wrong seting up the network ?
i tried leaving one NIC unconvigured, i tried configuring it as well.

also , maby i need to setup pppd ? or is the pppoe all i need ?

well... anyway , i know i am missing somethign stupid, can just feel it :P

I got FreeBSD working with PPoE.
Oh my god it was a hectic battle ... till I plugged in the damn ether net cable, F*&^%$ doh! :) hehe

anyways, when I'm done upgrading this morning, I'll posts the details

i was tryign with freebsd most of the time.
I am pretty damn sure i had the ethernet cable pluged in,
and in the right nic ;)

so , if u can tell me how u set urs up ?
maby i can see what i don't know about.

It means its searching for a carrier signal.

Ok, I have not seen more than 12 hours worth of hole and electron flow withing my townhouse since friday. If I did, I wouldve posted exactly everything, but sadly I cannot. Amazingly when I posted yesterday, I was telneting to my home machine, to retrieve everything I did ... and well :) Electricity went off.

Everything is pretty straight forward though, but one thing is for sure, you cannot term into the modem, I think you need the right settings for that. Anyways, the following is how I remember my ppp.conf... I cannot garuntee it right now, but someday ... when electricity flows my way, I will.

Ok, I'm gonna give manual dialing instructions...

start ppp ... type ppp <enter>

set device PPPoE:ep0
set speed sync
set authname username
set authkey myunknownpsswordthatIalwaysforget

--> Ok theoreticly this should be enough.
But ... Other settings that works
set ctsrts off

hmm ... I think that's it.

Ok this is where you type 'dial'
If you dont get PPP then obviously there's a problem.
things you can do...
try turning on chap. Last night I swore I saw this hapening without
chap turned on ... actually I dont think Ive turned it on before.
It's worth a try though.

Oh, and well, the last thing I did was before dialing, I went into term
so in ppp console type 'term'
and then youre stuck in a terminal that doesnt work,
this is where you type '~p' to get it into packet mode and exit the terminal. (This is how it worked for me first time ???)
anyways... throw your problems myways ... I did a **** load of reading on this.

Ofcourse, all these commands except dial go onto /etc/ppp/ppp.conf
and put it under default if youre as 'smart' as me.
and from console you can call ppp -ddial,
and well, you kinda have a 24 hour connection.
For startup .... rtm

Ethernet Cables
--> I went to fastcom last week friday ... about 5:30 :)
And well, if you live in jhb it aint that far, Ive ridden to jhb wmy whole life man :) If you go in, takes 5-10minutes, and the smile as you walk out wisling with your new cable.

FWIW I'm running RedHat 9 and Roaring Penguin and things are working pretty well. Here are copies of my configurations:

The adsl-start script uses the config file in the network-scripts directory.

----------8<----------
# File:/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
ETH='eth1'
ONBOOT=yes
USER='<obfuscated>'
DEMAND=no
DNSTYPE=SERVER
PEERDNS=yes
DNS1=
DNS2=
DEFAULTROUTE=yes
### ONLY TOUCH THE FOLLOWING SETTINGS IF YOU'RE AN EXPERT
CONNECT_TIMEOUT=20
CONNECT_POLL=2
ACNAME=
SERVICENAME=
PING="."
CF_BASE=`basename $CONFIG`
PIDFILE="/var/run/$CF_BASE-adsl.pid"
SYNCHRONOUS=no
CLAMPMSS=1412
LCP_INTERVAL=20
LCP_FAILURE=3
PPPOE_TIMEOUT=80
FIREWALL=NONE
LINUX_PLUGIN=
PPPOE_EXTRA=""
PPPD_EXTRA=""
----------8<----------

Make sure your password is in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets in the following format:
----------8<----------
"<username>" * "<password>"
----------8<----------

Also make sure there is no IP address assigned to your NIC that connects to the modem.

Now, of course you're going to want to route packets through the Linux box aren't you? This means you'll need to do some NAT. Google NAT HOWTO and look up masquerading.

These are the basic commands you'll need and a good place to put 'em is in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

----------8<----------
# In the NAT table (-t nat), Append a rule (-A) after routing
# (POSTROUTING) for all packets going out ppp0 (-o ppp0) which says to
# MASQUERADE the connection (-j MASQUERADE).
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE

# Turn on IP forwarding
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
----------8<----------

Now you should be set. IM me or catch me on IRC if you want to chat about this directly.

Has anyone tried setting up MyWireless under SmoothWall (www.smoothwall.org) ??
