I've assembled a general set of frequently asked questions at http://rodent.za.net/MyFAQ

As soon as phpWiki's page level permissions get out of the dark ages, I'll open it up so that anyone can contribute to the FAQ.

This post is definately a candidate for a "sticky"

If you have suggestions for other FAQ's please post em here.

Rodent thank you! You answered quite a number of questions for me. But I have a few more which you (or others) may have the answers to.

The MySignal exe - I have version 3.6. I find that it does not refresh the signal strength and decibel readings with any form of logical frequency. Sometimes it doesn't show anything. I can click on the lightning icon on the Network tab which refreshes the info on that tab but usually I return to the MySignal tab and see no change. Then for some unknown reason I will see that the info on the MySignal tab suddenly does change. It would be very useful to be able to move around in my office and get a real time readout of the signal strength. What have I done wrong?

Speaking of the decibels etc, when I do get a reading, I find that there are 2 numbers (which in the other connection utility supplied with the modem reads RSCP and ISCP with a unit of dBm. What do these mean and what do we want to see here (ie what is a useful range?) THen there is another number called ber which I see stands for BIT ERROR RATE and there is a link to explain it (http://rf.rfglobalnet.com/library/Resources/standards/gsm.pdf just to prove I have read some of the posts [;)])

I see on Rodent's FAQ site he says that a 128k connection means you are guaranteed 64k and the other 64k is shared. Does the logic then follow that a 256k connection will give a guaranteed 128k and the other 128k is shared and so on?

Has anyone found a good way of changing the tower you are connecting to? I found at a friend's place that he was getting 18% signal and still got the "remote server did not respond error". I know that this is often because the tower you have connected to is too far away so clearly I need to connect to a different tower. But how do I prevent the modem from connecting to this same tower when I try again?

Thanks to all for any help on these.

Cheers

Would a stronger signal result in better ping times ?

Is there anywhere else you can get an ethernet cable from aside from nowire.co.za ?

Hmmm... I'd like to suggest a revision [:)] of this question/answer:

Q: How long does it take to get the modem?
A: Typically between 7-14 days, if things go smoothly. Be prepared for credit checks, and copies of your books/accounts if you're a business. This can drag things along quite badly.

It should read:

Q: How long does it take to get the modem?
A: Typically between 7-14 days, if things go smoothly. Sentech will require credit checks, copies of your books if you are a business, your payslip if you're applying as an individual. Sentech may at it's own discretion also require (but not limit itself to) the following: copy of ID, copy of cancelled cheque, proof of address, dental records, blood samples, semen samples, finger prints, HIV tests, penile length and girth measurements (verfied by an auditor), your first born, ....

If only all FAQ's were this honest [:D]

Question:

Towers close to each other are set on two different frequencies as to not overlap, will this effect the number of towers that can go up in an area? There have been talk of a grid, an example would be nice? Hell, even a map with this grid on it would be great because then people can physically see if they're covered or not

When is Sentech going to anounce the resellers ? or are there any ? It seems a lot of people are claiming to be, but on the Sentech site there are none, Whats the Deal ?

If you split the tower into 3 segments ie. 360 degrees into 120 degree coverage segments, why are there only panels on two of these 3 segments? What about the other third?

I'm currently putting together something that will explain all the tower questions - just finding the pics - watch this space.

Ok I have put something together, check it out under the Tower Operations link.
You may have to Ctrl Refresh as Imaginet seem to be having server problems.

I have had Sentech 4 2 1/2 days now. It yields less speed than I expected. It is still however much faster than a Telkom connection.

I will stick with them 4 now, but what I would like 2 c is a typical Sentech ISP website. The current site is as boring as gutterwater.

Well, if you signed the standard contract, you'll have to stick with them for 24 months :)

Sentech has a way to go in terms of user friendlyness.
The easiest place they could start with would be thier site with the same kinda FAQ Rodent is putting together, because your right, the site is not good at all. That stupid flash animation is just irritating and unncessary. Go to the downloads section and it says there's downloads on another site, but there's nothing for MyWireless. Under the MyWireless downloads on the Sentech site, there's nothing at all. It would take them 20 minutes to add a brochure download or the installation software.

As for the Sentech login page for myWireless, my god, it's so unprofessional you wonder to yourself what you signed yourself up for ?

I could produce 10 times better in a few hours.

Another question for the FAQ, When will Sentech realise they need a better online presence if they want to attract more customers ?

What about adding some questions about gaming pings (what games can be played etc) and also sharing of the Sentech service over a LAN (even though this is not a MyWireless specific problem but it IS a frequently asked question..)

Nice faq rodent!

There is a few I would like to see, don't know if these questions have been asked or answered before.

What happens if the monthly subscription go down but you signed the contract, do you pay less or do you have to pay the orignal amount?

Is the current problem with pings due to the technology or just a routing issue (i.e. can it be fixed)?

Is there anything in the pipeline about introducing 1Mbps? (before Telkom does..) and thus if 1Mbps is introduced, prices *should* come down (otherwise 1Mbps would be R3000/month) not so? Also see above question.
