See the latest edgars club mag says the n8 will be available at selected stores from 1 october for R4999,00
 
Given the choice between a Nokia N8 for R5899 or a Samsung Galaxy S for R5409 i'd take the galaxy S any day.

In fact, i wouldn't take the Nokia over the Galaxy even if it was 1K cheaper. There is just such fast innovation on android at the moment. Android 3 is coming out in the next few months, and the app count is exploding. Its getting to a point where if a popular website releases a mobile app they will make sure they have an android version.
 
Problem with saying that, is that samsung phones tend to be lower in build quality than nokia's. So basically samsung can put more in because they dont have the same quality on there phones.

I'd have to agree with this, build quality is of utmost importance to me as well. No use having this awesome phone that will break the moment you drop it -over exaggeration, of course but stranger things have happened.

Imagine this:

The perfect world would be the N8 released with Android! I wonder if this can be done. Then you'd have the best of both worlds. I wonder if more people would be open to Nokia -specifically the N8 - then if this were to happen. It would be interesting the see the reactions if someone posted a new thread with the title, "Nokia N8 breakthrough, now being released with Android 2.2" :o
 
Yeah build quality is very important. I see the new HTC Desire HD is an all-aluminum unibody. Impressive stuff.

In general this is probably true, but the Galaxy S has good build quality. I think you would be nuts to choose the N8 at that price.
Expansys is probably just charging a rip-off price for now since the phone isn't in SA. I remember they were charging about R10 000 for the Galaxy S, while it only cost about R5500 if you imported one yourself from an overseas store.

I'm sure the N8 will end up much cheaper than that ridiculous price Expansys is advertising.

There was an interesting article I was just reading that referred to the limited number of apps available on Blackberry, for instance, versus the thousands of "useless" apps on iPhones etc. Who really needs an app that farts, a virtual light sabre or being able to chug a vitual beer (all apps, that I will add, I briefly had on my S60v3 device). Quality over quantity....
 
Just an aside from me.... the life span of a phone is only two years (on contract that is). You are talking about Android this, and iOS this, but if someone decides to go with an N8, for instance, they will only have to wait two years before replacing the phone if they really feel it is that bad. The same with any other phone and any other operation system.

While there might be tons of useless dirt in the android store, i'm fairly sure there is also more gold because of the sheer volume of the dirt pile. But it really comes down to your needs, if the n8 comes with the apps you need and like, then for you it'll be a great phone. You don't sound like someone who cares too much about apps.

I just think more and more the best pro app devs are moving towards the android/iphone stores.

I actually do find discovering news apps interesting for the first few weeks of owning a new phone. But I think most of my "frustration" comes from hearing people talking about the amazing apps available on iOS, Android, or whatever, and knowing that I have had those on an old phone for ages. It makes me question once again what the allure of these others phones really is.

I know with Apple it is all about brilliant marketing. We all know they could sell ice to eskimos. Their antenna problem is an example. No matter the shortcomings the cult will applaud.

Then we hear about "speed" and "ease of use" yet I am hearing the same things said about Symbian^3 but it still gets flack.

LancelotSA, there is no way in hell (or heaven) that Symbian have the apps that iOS and Android offer. I've been digging in the Apple App Store for months - and own about 100 apps already - and I've barely scratched the surface. My biggest gripe with my ex-Nokia E90 was the lack of applications. The E90 promised so much but delivered close to buggerall. The apps is what makes the iPhone/iPod Touch for me. Android guys will probably say the same.

I would be interested in you mentioning some of the apps and what they do. Just for interests sake of course. Bear in mind I am sitting with a two year old phone so we would need to factor this in if we were to do a comparison. Once I acquire my new phone a more accurate comparison would be possible.

Perhaps you are looking in all the wrong places.... I have (or have had as many I got rid of once I realised I never actually used them) tons of apps loaded on my phone too.

I base my argument on the fact thatr I regularly hear people talking about this great new application on their state of the art phones yet I have it already. I know those ones I mentioned were spoken about in a derogatory manner on a website, and so they should have been, but my N82 had the light saber, virtual beer and sound maker ages ago.

As stated, please feel free to type a list of these apps, with a brief summary of what they do and I'll endeavour to show your the same on Symbian...
 
...and back on topic with the N8. I am almost certain I have not heard of this on another phone :

Basically you set up your Nokia N8 about five feet from any TV or display it can plug into via HDMI, and it uses its little camera to track your hands and turn the whole thing into a touchable surface. Brilliant! Well — maybe not brilliant, but certainly a cool feature. They call it Plug and Touch

LancelotSA, you can go to the Apple App Store and see the 250 000 + applications for iOS. Do so before you commit to a new phone. You'll then understand the difference. The iOS user can choose between hundreds of apps for every similar one available on Symbian and they get it for about R7 per app in most cases. No comparison. MeeGo will do better I'm sure but as things stand at present there is no comparison, so I'm not even going to try.
