I'm a BlackBerry fanboy ... and a Apple fanboy ... and a Android fanboy ... and may even be a MeeGo fanboy ... but Symbian is dead and I don't venerate the dead.

I wouldn't say it's dead. It will still be the most popular mobile OS for at least the next 3 years.
 
You'r correct EtienneK, so allow me to rephrase: "... but Symbian, as far as high-end smartphones go, is dead ..."

Nokia themselves are stating this fact by saying that MeeGo is where they are heading for these high-end smartphones, and we know MeeGo is a reality already. Symbian, will for sure live on in "feature" and dumb phones.

Hey LancelotSA, not trying to be cool, just enjoying a friendly chaffy debate with you on the future of Symbian on smartphones; nothing too serious. You like Nokia and that's cool. Every person has his/her own reasons to love or hate a product/brand and that's just jim-dandy. Enjoy your new N8 when you get it. I'm sure it will be a great device.
 
I would still like to know what a smartphone actually is... :/

N8 has sharper, clearer pics, but less impressive low light performance...will have to wait for a full test to see.
Oh, check the demo video. Looks like Symbian 3 is alive & well to me :) I cannot wait
 
Hey LancelotSA, its time for your upgrade as well, hey? I remember two years ago we were discussing Samsung Omnia vs N82. I can't say much about the Omnia as my phone was stolen, but I ended up buying myself a SE W995 from someone who didn't want the upgrade. I loved the phone and now that I can upgrade, I need something similar. My choices so far are: Nokia N8, SE Xperia X10, Iphone 4 or the Samsung Galaxy. All four great phones in my opinion. Thought that I could not afford the iphone - that was till this morning when mtn released their prices - R379 for R200 airtime + R150 data! Well well worth it in my opinion. And the guys from "STUFF" magazine raves about this phone. I don't know if I am willing to wait for the N8 though. Nokia's are usually way overpriced on contracts. They don't come cheap. And right now there still is no confirmation on when it is due. I like Samsung, but I think in this case I'm going to go for the iPhone or the SE Xperia. Both is amazing phones. Now just need to decide which one!!!!!!!!!
 
The Edgars Club magazine says the the N8 will be available in October for R4999:D:D:D:D

That would be a mistake I think. I prefer the styling on the X10 but apart from that the X10 has almost nothing going for it. You'll be running Android 1.6 and from the current roadmap it looks like Sony will only be releasing Android 2.1 for it in future (No 2.2 Froyo, which adds about 300% speed increase on some functionality), and that would be it. Also, my colleague has one and that phone is really slow, especially taken into account that it has a 1Ghz processor like the Samsung. So yeah, just make sure you try out both the Sammy and the Sony before you make a final decision.

A friend of mine spoke to MTN yesterday and this was the msg he sent me:

hey bud spoke to mtn the official launch date for n8 is oct the 1st on a anytime 200 for R279

So...let's see. I'm curious to see what VC and Cell C will offer.

EDIT : IF Cell C offers it for around the same price, I wonder if you can couple it with the R999 data bundle. Hypothetically giving you (and these are all "hypotheticals" of course!) ; Say in the region of R280 + R84 = R364 p/m
(Yes, yes, I'm AWARE that those are MTN prices coupled with Cell C data rates...but I'm mainly just thinking out loud, m'kay.)

Fanboys are the only ones that slam Symbian. People who actually KNOW something about phones other than their iPhone/BlackBerry will know that it's one of (if not) the most mature smartphone OS there is.
 
Okay, so Symbian fanboys are not fanboys, only iPhone/BlackBerry fanboys are fanboys (and not as smart when it comes to smartphones as the Symbian not-to-be-called-fanboys fanboys)? :confused:

I work with and program for different phone platforms every day. And I still think Symbian is starting to show its age.
