A friend of mine is visiting from the UK and brought his O2 Nokia N95 and wants to use Vodacom pre-paid data.

I gave him a sealed Vodacom starter pack which I had lying around. His phone does not seem to be network locked as he can send and receive SMS and make and receive phone calls on the Vodacom SIM. At this point I transferred airtime to his number and *100# confirms it was received.

He called 155 and asked them to provision the SIM for data and send him the OTA MMS and WAP settings which he saved as per the instructions.

He is unable to use the Gmail application or the phone's web browser, any attempt at using data results in a 'data packet: authorisation failed' error.

He has since called 100 and 111 and was asked whether this number was pre-paid or contract, when he told them it was pre-paid they told that it's actually a contract number. The starter pack did come with a note saying the SIM needs to be activated before November 2008.

Any suggestions?

just try doing it via vodacom4me website, that normally automates the whole process

Have asked to check if the sim is active for data.

Did you try another sim in the phone?
Thanks.

Unfortunately not, he's been running around doing tourist things, but if he's not online by tomorrow I'll try the SIM in my data card.

I was just concerned that the Vodacom system seems to think it's a contract number, but it's actually pre-paid, I thought this may have something to do with the authentication error.

If its a new Prepaid SIM, then chances are Data wasnt activated on it.

I also found that you dont need to call 111 or 155 to have it activated anymore. Simply just dial 100 when you inserted the first time, let the lady speak klaar, then press * to end the call.

In about 10 to 15mins you can make a data connection.

He did phone 100 straight after inserting the SIM, and afterwards called 155 asking them to provision the SIM and send the MMS and WAP OTA settings. After the call to 155 he got a confirmation SMS saying that he was provisioned for data and also received the two OTA settings, which he duly saved and made sure they were the default settings.

The next morning he was still getting the authentication error message, he phoned 100 and 111, which is when he was told his number was a contract number, not a pre-paid number. He also called 155 again and they went through various phone settings with him and checked that the APN was 'internet' but he still couldn't connect.

Hi ginngs. I had the same problem recently with my brother's N95.

The problem was also that the simcard wasn't provisioned for data, he's with Cell C however.

One thing, which might sound obvious, is to check in the Web browser's settings and make sure it uses the Vodacom access point.

Reason why I say this, is my brother's N95 had all the network's settings preloaded and it wanted to use MTN instead of CellC, so I had to change that setting.

But like I said, after the sim was successfully set up for data, we could connect.

One thing to try, test his simcard in your phone, if you see him again ;)
