I am the only one who thinks Naas Botha knows nothing about rugby? "Ja, well, but, ah..." Had a friend who always would want to rush back to the TV at half time to see what "Naas had to say". The man has absolutely no insight or at least he cannot express them.

SA must have the worst commentators in the world! I mean, who is any good? Lets not name the terrible ones, it will take more time.

lol playing the game and knowing anything about it are two different things. I remember when those pens that allowed you to draw on the screen came out, Naas used to draw almost the whole screen white, possibly in an attempt to demonstrate that he knew what he was talking about :D

AAnother Naas basher,

Neither do you ?

Naas = Rugby Genius
looking at the 80's games you can see he knows where the ball will be before anyone else
he played the game out in hes head
its a sign of genius

I prefer John Robbie. Now there is a man who knows what he is talking about.

And on the Aadder Hand. :)

You got it wrong - His got more insight than some complete team's IQ.
I'm not sure hey, personally I think his opinion is worth no more than yours or mine. If you're not out there on the field, then you're an armchair critic. We all like to think that if things are done our way, it would work.

The fact is that tactics are as much a part of sport as the physical execution on the field. Players are basically employed to execute tactical decisions made behind the scenes. It's very similar to a war scenario where soldiers equate to players - they are not employed to make tactical decisions, people higher up the rank are.

Also bear in mind that the game has changed since Naas played.

Again using the war scenario, it would be like soldiers of the 1940's criticising war decisions made today, where warfare is clearly much more advanced. A 1940's strategy would not work in 2007, so does that mean that a 1940's soldier's opinion on present day warfare is any more valid than any of our own just because he fought back then? He wasn't even involved in making tactical decisions, just a soldier who was employed to carry out orders.

Anyway this isn't an attack on Naas, just an example illustrating the difference between playing the game and knowing anything about it. Applies to any team sport. Tactical staff are employed for a reason, and are as much a part of the team as the players.

The exact reason why Naas is frequently employed for technical skills training seminars, but I guess it is because he knows nothing :D

I never said he didn't ;) Anybody who knows enough about the game could be employed as such, regardless of whether or not you've played the game.

Did not what? I did not say you said anything its what what you thought I said. I refereed to the thread originator. What has playing the game have to do with it? Experience is more value than perceived knowledge. Tacticians is another thing all together. Then there was the know nothing commentators like Edwill van Aaarde, just like horse race commentating.

Naas at least knows what he is talking about, but I presume again that is why SABC employ him as presenter, He knows nothing and that is the only qualification you should have to become presenter.

I don't claim to be an expert, but even I can tell Naas has got nothing worthwhile to tell. I want to listen to someone who can give me an insight to the game. Explain the tactics being or not being used. Who is the guy who writes for the Cape Times? Brendan Venter, I think. Read what he says and you learn something.

Same with Eddie Lewis on soccer. Don't get me started on Terry "The" Paine!

Then why bash Naas, if you want insight just get some books and read them. Generally they are there to comment on the game and is relating as they see it to presumed rugby knowledgeable's. They are not there to teach the game. For that there is a new specific program that started by Tok. Watch it rather and leave Naas for the "experts"

Sure, just because I'm a passenger in a plane, doesn't mean I can fly it.

I value his opinion of things I've missed in the game. Sure a 'Private' has learnt to fight and worked his way up the ranks. But remember a General nowadays, is not on the front line-if you know what I'm trying to say. :)

EDITED: He sees what we see on TV and makes a professional judgement on it. Is that easy?

Naas knows a thing or two - he's just not very eloquent. English is his 2nd language too.
(Not that I liked his style of playing though!)

He just has trouble in speaking the English.

But he is a Rugby Genius and a Blou Bull. it is my duty as a WP supporter to hate him for it :)

IOW, all commentators then?

I would prefer to just have the sound that is picked up through the refs mic. I watched the game against the all blacks last year at Rustenburg and they sold a little receiver with one earphone for R30, it was such a nice way to watch a live game and hear everything the ref said and players within a certain range of him

Just some info; in Germany the big Football games, the television panel is actually based at the stadium. This way their comments are based on what they see as well as what is shown on TV.

The Ref feed would be great if we could select it as a separate audio channel.
