Name changes 'make us African'

C'mon folks. Africa is for Africans. Everyone knows that. In England all the names of places are English. In Poland they are all Polish. In China they are all Chinese.

In Africa they will all be African. Get used to it, and buy a subcription for a new map every month.

heh heh!

I agree with you, but we are also Africans. White, but white africans. Born, bred and living

And in Holland, they're all Holeish.

Changing things on paper, nameboards, maps, etc. won't change what's in the hearts and minds of the ppl.

If they think changing the names of Towns will make ppl feel more at home in their own country, then they're way off. How bout better law enforcement, education, health services, etc.?

I doubt any of the countries mentioned, have as diverse a population as SA.

'White African' is a contradiction the ANC and other SADC leaders don't accept.
A black American, who has never set foot on this continent, is more of an African it seems.

"In some instances these [unchanged] names give the impression that South Africa is an European outpost rather than a truly African country."

He wouldn't know what an European outpost is even if it hit him on the head. I can't even remember back 10 years, 350 years LOL.

Tshwane region ANC secretary Blanco Mabaso warned that opposition parties should "be glad that there still is a neighbourhood with the name Pretoria.

Do not tempt the ANC (or) we will change that as well," he said.

So who wants to argue that the name changes are not implemented to spite the Afrikaans people after such a blatant statement? The same with Potchefstroom, viva De la ry laan. :)

Tshwane Metro Council DA leader Fred Nel said Mabaso's statement "shines big red warning lights for democracy in South Africa".

FF Plus chairperson in the greater Pretoria region Willie Spies said the ANC reaction to the court ruling was "infantile" and revealed a "Mugabe mentality of the local ANC".

FF Plus got my vote, because of the + it has to be better than what we have ruling us now, the ANC--
The DA can understate things so passively, really annoys me that they do not have a backbone.

Many more Africans than the white people in S.A. are not black. Ever been to North Africa?

I don't think it really matters to the ruling elite. You can be sure that if the majority of people in SA were white, then the names of places would be as is.

As for diverse. Not really. The population of SA is about 55 million and only 3-4 million are white. As Mbeki said today in parliament:
During question time in Parliament, the President also called for compromise on changing the names of towns and cities. He said MPs needed to work together on the name change issue to reflect the cultures of South Africans more fairly.

Reflect the cultures "more fairly".

Do the math. All those dorps in SA are going to be changed come hell or high water. Get used to it.

Arabs in the north do not consider themselves part of Africa and prefer to think of themselves as middle eastern. Not to mention the salvery that they go up to over the last 5,000 years. It's no wonder that Sudan is going through what it is these days given the animosity over the centuries between the arabs and the blacks.

Oh sure, I can get used to it... eventually, doesn't mean i have to like it. I'll still use the old street names. What's in a name anyway?;)

Well, if you would like to be a cabinet minister, you just HAVE to get the right name. Which is easy, with rwenzori's EZ-Naming Picker:

Your FIRST name - pick one of:

Ivy
Manto
Beauty
Eunice
Geraldine
Sydney
Ronnie
Mike
Slimebag

THEN the FIRST half of your DOUBLE-BARRELED SURNAME - pick one of:

Fraser
Tshabalala
Tshabalalalala
Zuma
Boerewors
Moleketi
Nqakula
Smith
Norris
Cruywagen

THEN the SECOND half of your DOUBLE-BARRELED SURNAME - pick one of:

Fraser
Tshabalala
Tshabalalalala
Zuma
Boerewors
Mbeki
Moleketi
Jones
Zikalala

Put them together and you are guaranteed a post!!! For example:

Beauty Boerewors-Jones!

Who could resist!!!

The thing that I think is causing the consternation from the Afrikaner people (and rightly so), is that the Afrikaner people built Pretoria and virtually every other major city in the country.

President Thabo Mbeki said in Parliament on Thursday that name changes for South African cities and towns allowed the country to move closer to its African identity

Just exactly how insecure is he in his "identity"?

Gave me a chuckle.

Koff koff! Not quite! JHB was built by the hated "Uitlanders", Durbs by the British, for starters!

It's not the Afrikaner that does not want pointless name changes! What about the humble tourists who spend their Pounds and Dollars here? I'd never dream of spending a holiday where I can't pronounce the name correctly! With the possible exception of Phuket! :D

If I asked many of my UK friends where Harare was, 50% wouldn't have a clue! Tell them it was originally called Salisbury (Rhodesia) and the lights might just light up!

I didn't see a rush to rename Londinium (London in Latin) after the Romans finished building roads in the UK and returned home for a large bowl of Mama's pasta!

If they really want it more African then names like Bribe Vally, Crookstown and Fraud Meadows might be more apt?

u see, the inclusion of words like town, valley and meadows makes those names European :D

I never knew that Harare was Salsbury...I wonder what Bulawayo was before ?
