Name changes 'make us African'

I'm changing my car's name to eToyota kerolla.
It's the right spirit?

No, the Yaris is the spirit :D

Agreed that names like Verwoed etc should change but why change the names of streets based on their geographical surroundings.

The post referred to the ANC (SA) and SADC states, not North Africa.

I was not referring to the region, but to the idiotic idea that only black people qualify is being African and that people of other races who were born here (from parents who were also born here, just like their parents were), most of whom have never set foot on the European continent, are somehow Europeans.

Hard to believe any country that despises anything relating to colonialism so vehemently really embraces the white man with open arms.

What the president is trying to say, is that he is embarrassed to live in a ex-colonial country. So, in changing the names of every "European" city/place, he will create the illusion for himself, that we are now an African country.

But hey, the referendum on name changes ... erm ... no wait, there wasn't one, was there. Oh yeah, governmental mind readers "know" that everyone wants names to change (sometimes multiple times).

Maybe they just want to prevent other countries from invading us, by keeping them from knowing what to target.
This is the problem in a nutshell. A mayor or other self-important oaf trying to get publicity or kudos from name changes.
Apparently the recent Cape Town name change proposals came from ONLY 50 people.

If a new government (not the ANC) takes over ever, and lest suppose its the DA or FF Plus (i know fantasy world) would they change the names back? On the one hand I would support it, on the other, it would be a waste of money once again. What would you guys do, if you were in this fantasy world and leaders of the new government?

Keep in mind the ANC is not changing names back, its just changing names of towns, named originally by the people who started and created the town.

I would do it, but only after dealing with the real problems. Once poverty is eradicated, everybody is literate and educated, joblessness is entirely the domain of the disabled and the lazy (I mean no disrespect to the disabled by putting them in one sentance), and the Pound is two to the Rand, I'll tackle name places. I'll get generic names. I'll put out a reward in each town for locals to come up with a completely generic name, choose the best ones (in terms of what is easy to remember and pronounce, and free of any connotations), and let the residents vote. So no one can bitch about it afterwards.

Another thing I would push for is to make all industries work 24/7. We could employ twice as many people, at least.

Er, don't you mean allow? Most industries would gladly work 24/7 if not hampered by idiotic labour laws and other red tape issues.

I don't know of any laws prohibiting any industry from working 24/7. Many industries do. I don't mean people should work longer hours at all. But surely three 8 hour shifts can work well?

But I'd like to see banks, shops, etc open around the clock. Of course late night and early morning would be slower for business than the day, but still, once people get the hang of it, it will boost the economy significantly and create a lot of extra jobs.

What do you suppose they would change the names to? Excluding the previous names ofcourse.

Would only change to the old original names.. give credit where credit is due. If I were to change names back that is.

In some instances these [unchanged] names give the impression that South Africa is an European outpost rather than a truly African country.

Eish, who here wants to live a "truly African country"?

If you do want to life in a "truly African country" why not go to some of them and see how great life is with their much more prevalant ADSL lines and superior highway and road systems...

I reckon we should start collecting as many towns old name boards as possible. They may be worth a couple of rand to some collector in the future. Then maybe i can retire before 65! :)

And in doing that say that apartheid was okay?

No more okay than changing names based on BS claims that every square inch of S.A. was inhabited by black people and completely ignoring the real (proven) first settlers - the Bushmen.

Name changes 'make us African'

So does killing kids and cementing body parts in walls, killing women who wear pants , having s3x at the side of a busy street in brakpan (in broad daylight) - guess its a free-for-all now :D

Nah, collect the NEW ones instead. That will send the required signal.
