NAS Problem

Did one of the newly changed PC's perhaps utilise the same IP which the NAS was configured for?

Well, if DHCP is active and running, perhaps one of the IP's in the DHCP scope clashes with the NAS (You may need to exclude the NAS box's IP)

Sounds like the PC may have been changed to the IP that the NAS is currently using (provided my assumption of IP clashes being the cause is correct)

Edit - Does that NAS unit perhaps come with software, which allows you to "scan" the network for those types of Units? Almost like a management app?

You just did! (I was leaving you the honour... knew you would be in here sooner or later!) :D

;)

 smartypants! Much as (like you I believe) I think it's better in terms of - well, you know - they can't, this is one of those horrible appliance monstrosities, that option is simply unavailable here. But maybe some RTFM is in order here?

I know, I was just continuing me & Ryder_JHB's inside joke concerning NAS devices :)

You'll have to explain DHCP to me, I'm only partially clued up as far as networks go. Or point me in the direction of an article explaining it if you wouldn't mind...

DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - In English: A way for a server to offer IP Addresses to client systems that ask for them. You configure a scope (A "pool" of ip's) and these are the ones that are offered on the network. Perhaps the IP of your NAS system falls within that Pool!

Yes it does. And it's quite a bad piece of software too. Terrible UI etc. What happens, is that you can't access the drive at all (as far as I'm aware, and without using any special hacks, that may or may not exist) until you install the software, so this had to be done on each computer wanting to access the drive. Then it has to be set up, using the software and then each laptop has to 'connect' to it. After this, a service is permanently run, that connects to the drive and shows it in My Computer.

After configuring the IPs of there two computers, it didn't show up, so I went into the software and after a short scan decided there were no Netgear drives attached to the network.

I unfortunately ran out of time at the office, but just before I left I disconnected the LAN cable from the NAS and plugged it back in, which didn't achieve anything.

By the way, apparently this is actually a SAN, not a NAS...

I'm going to phone our support guy tomorrow and see if if can help, because he knows how our whole network is set up.

The fact that you changed the IP's to Static on the PC's seems to have caused this issue - so definately consider the ipconflict idea, or perhaps attempt to re-install this "software agent" thingy on one of the PC's (It may have gotten itself confused when you changed to static ip's) and from what you have said about this unfriendly software, it is very likely it is not very intelligent. A re-install may help!
