Nasa: Sun will 'flip upside down' within weeks

So the sun will then rise in the west and set in the east.... :D

That will happen when the earths poles flip (geomagnetic reversal). This happens about every 250 000 years.

WTF are you on about? This you replying to MKs post. Did you somehow not say that the sun will rise in the west when the earths poles flip?

Yes, did you bother reading anyone elses responses for the explanation? Its now been explained several times in this thread...

Still doesn't mean you didn't respond to my post with a pissy attitude. As if you had no idea what I was talking about. ;)

You got EXACTLY what you gave...

As if you had no idea what I was talking about. ;)
Except the explanation was mentioned before you even responded in this thread :( If you had read the comments you would have understood.

Besides the fact that I don't read an entire thread before going back and replying to posts (I doubt you do either), there is no explanation as to why you think east would become west(or even why north would be come south) in the case of a magnetic polar reversal until super mentions one. There are only explanations of magnetic reversal. Not to mention the fact that the directions are conventions that predate the discovery of the compass or magnetic poles. Even if the poles reversed today the sun would go on rising in the east and setting in the west. Compass needles would start pointing south is all.

When there are so few posts I generally do. Especially when I am going to have a go at what someone said. Also, after you commented, a couple of people tried to correct you. You seem to have ignored them as well.

No, they would point to magnetic north. As do all compasses :) North and South will flip and ergo so will east and west :)

Numb nuts. True north doesn't change when magnetic north changes. It changes all the fccking time.

Nice strawman, no one said true north changes.

Jesus. You're a dog with a bone. You said east and west would reverse along with north and south. There are no magnetic south, east and west. There is a magnetic north. The rest don't change when magnetic north changes. North east and south are calculated from magnetic north where ever that may be.

Cute.

Darn, wonder why a compass that points to magnetic north comes with a big W and E on it :/

Edit: I'm wrong of course north, east, south and west are constants. Magnetic north (even when its near the south pole) is used to navigate after calculating for true north.

Picture a geographic north and a magnetic North on opposite sides :)

Cute.

It also comes with a little turny bit so that you can calculate for true north and make the big N, S, W and E point in the right directions.

LMAO. ghoti thinks east and west are 90 degrees right and left of where the compass needle points. Don't get stranded anywhere with ghoti.

Ive wondered if the magnetic anomalies at Bangui, Kursk and Temagami are some of the disturbances predicted in simulation models.

Okay, the majority of them just have a needle that point magentic north. Lets simplify this discussion. For everyone who owns a normal compass with a needle that points to magnetic north. When the reversal is complete, the needle will point in the other direction.

False advertising on this compass then :(

No one is arguing your latitude and longitude will change.

I have a cheap **** plastic one in my desk draw that has the turny bit. I have a fairly nice one in a box somewhere with the turny bit... you know what? Never mind. I know you well enough to realise that this is as close as you are capable of coming to conceding a point.

Thats just the picture from wikipedia.

Will we be in the northern hemisphere then? Is there hope for South-Afric... I mean North-Africa?

/sarcasm
