Nasa: Sun will 'flip upside down' within weeks

Just heading to the west coast. See you in Debbin.....

I have a cheap **** plastic one in my desk draw that has the turny bit. I have a fairly nice one in a box somewhere with the turny bit... you know what? Never mind. I know you well enough to realise that this is as close as you are capable of coming to conceding a point.

Dear NickEEE. If the Earth pole's shift:

What would happen in reality?
If I then take out my compass or cell phone and decide to walk North from JHB, where will I end up ... North Africa or CapeTown?

Thanks

You'd end up North of Johannesburg if you had half a brain.

Now I can see what the other people are getting at? Get a education as soon as you can, then try very hard!

Not other people. ghoti. Dude this **** coming from someone who has at least half a brain like ghoti was strangely amusing. Coming from you it borders on schadenfreude. Compasses only ever show you north by coincidence. Only people lost in the wilderness would blindly follow a compass without calculating true north and checking a map. You get an education. This is very basic stuff. Compasses do not decide were north is.

Dear NickEEE

Yeah I also trust the African way like checking the green moss (not the green stuff you smoke) on trees, etc. So you say all the exploring ships that founded Africa was actually lost as their compasses were fake (No trees on a ship)? Sure they had to calculate the difference between true north and the magnetic north to be exact but then please explain what's the use of the compass otherwise? ;)

You need a sponsor? Maybe I can help!

The sun's magnetic field reversal is regular and we know what to expect. Earth's entry into the equatorial plane of the Milky Way is much more of an unknown. Nothing to worry about yet since it's still about 20 light years away. Currently our planet is located in the outer reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Unfcckingbelievable. Compasses conveniently give you a rough idea were north is. They don't tell you were true north is unless you know the current magnetic declination. A massive shift would just create a rather massive declination. It wouldn't change were north actual is because true north is a constant. I can't explain this any clearer.

Question is... is it easier to recalibrate our perception or redo our maps :)

We have to recalibrate all the time. Magnetic declination changes all the time. It would be very simple to recalibrate. The number would just be much larger but, it's still just basic addition or subtraction.

You cannot explain it at all as you are trying to hard to be a clever [-]N[/-]DickEEE.

I leave you this:

The North Magnetic Pole wanders, but does so slowly enough that an ordinary compass remains useful for navigation.

However, at random intervals, which average about several hundred thousand years, the Earth's field reverses, which causes the north and South Magnetic Poles to change places with each other. These reversals of the geomagnetic poles leave a record in rocks that allow paleomagnetists to calculate past motions of continents and ocean floors as a result of plate tectonics.

there is nothing in the millions of years of geologic record to suggest that any of the 2012 doomsday scenarios connected to a pole reversal should be taken seriously. A reversal might, however, be good business for magnetic compass manufacturers

Lol! Where have I disagreed with wiki or a scientist?

Just leave that there, I deliberately left the links out to those quotes to see your response, I came to the conclusion I am not willing or inclined to "debate" or argue with a clueless arrogant tool in serious need of basic education! Ghoti were right on all accounts!

LMFAO!
