Washington - Nasa said on Tuesday it will launch in 2014 an unmanned test flight of its Orion deep space capsule, made by Lockheed Martin to someday carry astronauts to the moon, an asteroid or Mars.

The test launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida aims to send the capsule into orbit, where it will circle the Earth twice, then attempt to make an intact re-entry into Earth's atmosphere before plunging into the ocean.

Didn't they go to the moon already in 1969? So whats the problem now? I mean its been a while, with loads of technological advances. hmmmm.

why dont they just soup up the original craft?

1969's technology vs 2011 technology.

Best to start out clean with a new design than trying to modify new stuff to fit into old craft. Modifying old craft will be more expensive than building new craft from scratch.

Also - there's no way you can stop halfway to fix a modification that's giving issues - there's no tools or facilities... So everything have to be 100%. Not 99%.

I wish they would make spacecraft a little bit more elegant.

1969 we go to the moon, 2014 we try to go to the moon....
we're going backwards.

Must go dust off those laser reflectors and freshen up the footprints and the flags.

Just for kicks get a taxi to drive all over the place at the planned landing site :D

I wonder what their reaction will be  :D

"Houston, we got a problem... there's tyre marks all over the place!!!"

:D

Well hopefully they use a better set for the moon landing photo op this time.

No wonder al lot of people believe they haven't done it for real the first time ..

They said they are stopping the space program.

I like the yanks but the amount of money that has been wasted on visits to the ET that is not there is a bit silly.

Compared to the trillions wasted on the war in the ME as well as the Wall Street bail-out? The space program was a drop in the bucket and was stopped to divert funds to the 2 main drains mentioned above.

Not quite.

All advances are incremental or based on previous or copied designs.
