THE ruling ANC will appoint two independent researchers to investigate the nationalisation of mines, its secretary general said on Monday.

"The NEC (national executive committee) has resolved to appoint two senior researchers and a project manager to investigate successful models that could be considered on the role of the state in mining," Gwede Mantashe told reporters in Johannesburg.

"We are engaging the research institutions to provide researchers (for) the project... we are going to try and get researchers who are independent of the ANC," he said, according to SABC radio news.

Mantashe said the African National Congress' economic information committee would provide the terms of the reference to the researchers.

The research report would be presented at the end of next year at the ANC's next national conference.

This decision was resolved at the first NEC meeting after the National General Council meeting in September.

If nationalisation is not part of ANC policy then why is it being investigated? Just wondering.

Because as per their news conference weeks ago they said they were going to investigate it. Guess you must have missed that massive news broadcast

Also if you had watched the news you would have seen that this is not something the ANC actually wants to do, it was an agenda pushed by the ANCYL. They wanted to call for nationalization, but the ANC was able to water that down to just an "investigation into nationalization". Trevor Manual spent a lot of time talking the ANCYL down.

Isn't this the same ANC that sold Iscor and Telkom?

Nope.. not the same ANC.. the Mandela/Mbeki Administration done that. Zuma will sell the false teeth from his Granny if it assured him of more popularity

If you believe that, then you are seriously deluded. The ANC really, really, really want to nationalize, it means more money to line pockets with.

Doubt it, it would effect their profits too much. Most of the big ANC officials are VERY capitalist and have their fingers in most of those pies. Theres no way they want to mess up the status quo.

Its the "have-nots" in the ANCYL that are wanting this.

Maybe, but I trust ANC scumbags like I trust snakes. Not very much. anyway, that the ANCYL is given enough power to force the ANC to do anything is quite worrying. The tail wagging the dog and all that.

Listening to SAfm yesterday the idea of nationalisation of mines were raised at ANC meetings as far back as the 60s, as mentioned above the only reason it's being looked at now is ol' Juma's comments.
