So what happens when the US closes the border with the new "country"?

As I said, large scale, self-rule, not segregation. An independent country, rather than a bunch of whack jobs living in isolation.

Won't stand up to public opinion. Any politician who would threaten the native Americans would be in for a career suicide. They'll appease them and make a new treaty - this time adding some more welfare benefits.

If they pull this off it will certainly fall under the heading "Xmas Miracle"
Considering the way things stand in the U.S. at the moment, with all the profiling, Patriot Act, Anti-terror regulations, the guavament is going to come down on this hard.
It would not surprise me to hear these seperatists being labelled domestic terrorists, and the press being banned from entering the area, and the travel of these documents and people being prohibited.
The chances of a repeat of the Pine Ridge Incident (Wounded Knee) in 1973, all over again , if not worse.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is a non-story, Not even a whisper in US news sources. Doesn't mean that much but still...if the Americans don't care who does?
