Natty upgrade - no GUI after reboot

Hey guys

Hoping someone can help. I upgraded to Natty this afternoon. Everything went fine (or so I thought) but on rebooting, I see a console version of all the startup scripts (ie. Starting <blah> [OK]) etc, it runs through everything and finishes, but then just sits there. I have a blinking cursor, but not even a login prompt, and nothing else happens. Almost as if Ubuntu thinks it has started the GUI. How can I find out what the problem is and fix it?

Push control+alt+F2 or F3... can you switch to console?

Thanks for the reply. Yep, that works. I get a terminal login, but I'm not sure what to do from here.

You can try login then:

sudo service gdm restart

Though Im not sure, I dont know what to expect yet.

I've made some progress. (I think)

I copied my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to xorg.conf, and then restarted gdm, which gave me an error message saying something like "It appears your graphics card is not capable of running Unity" or some crap (I have a ATI 6950) and then loaded up Gnome in failsafe mode. I'm currently downloading the latest linux driver from ATI's site and hoping this helps. If I'm still in the same spot, I'll try ctrl-alt-f7 from the console - either way I'll report back shortly.

Yeah, I hope you made a backup of the original cause Unity uses a funky engine.

Arg, this is a massive upgrade, all I can is browse and wait an hour for it too finish :/

Ok bizarre problem now. I'm trying to run the official driver file. It executes, asks for admin password, I type in - then it exits with a "Permission denied" error. Any ideas?

Run the file with the sudo command? or su to root.

The problem is that IS sudo'd..

Try run the file as root?

#sudo -su
then run the command

Also perhaps try chmod 777 the file? to make sure its executable?

Unity's up and running - though it feels like everything's happening like wading through water.. Looks crisp and clear, but it's slow as hell.

So I went into Ubuntu classic mode (no effects) - and now no matter what I do, I cannot get back into Unity. So far, this is a pretty ****ty release for me.

Really can't seem to come right with this. I guess either the ATI drivers aren't working, or they're not installed/configured properly. I tried installing GNOME3 to see if that would make a difference. It installed, booted, and then told me it was running in fallback mode, most likely because my graphics hardware couldn't support it. I have a ATI HD6950, so this seems a little unlikely. This is probably what's preventing Unity/Gnome classic from running too.

Is there any way I could fix the driver/graphics setup?

Does your motherboard have onboard display? If it has, remove the AMD Card and boot into Ubuntu to remove the ATI Drivers. Put the card back and install it again (correctly hopefully )

Works perfectly with my Nvidia.

Not sure what I think about unity just yet.
