I’ve found 3 things crucial to getting a good rest:
1) Practice good habits around bedtime. Switch off screens as early as is practical for you. Phone. Tv. Gaming device. All of them. Lower the levels of light in the evening and read something from an actual book. Screens and the stimulation they provide create noise in your mind - start turning that down sooner rather than trying to shut it off once you’re already in bed.
2) Manage your insulin. High insulin = lower other hormones, including melatonin which is what tells your brain it’s time to sleep. Eat earlier in the evening and stay away from sugar. Eat veggies and proteins first in your meal and save carbs for last. It will blunt your insulin spike.
3) Get into a routine. Wake up and go to bed at regular times as often as possible including over weekends. Set and work with your natural clock and rhythm instead of working against it.
I try to work hard and be honest. It sounds simple but I aim to get into bed without hang ups from my day. If I know I’ve given my best and I haven’t harmed anyone deliberately then I don’t have inner turmoil flipping the toss and turn switch on top of things that I might worry about that I can’t control.
