Need a car

Yeah Suzuki Swift lovely solid little car another great car VW Up but it's overpriced.

I'm also thinking of changing my little brio for swift or aygo.

+1 for the swift if you can find one, maybe look in other province's, you might get a top spec one.

As others have said.. Can't go wrong with a 2nd hand jap car.

Cars of the 3 cylinder stable have yet to prove themselves to me as I'm not sold.. Although the fiesta 1.0T has won engine of the year so that saves face for the 3 pots. Four cylinder, NA engines don't strain as much as the 3 pot turbos making them much more reliable and increases their longevity.

My '08 yaris has never given me a single day of problems. My last service costed me R1.4k & is done every 15000 km's - super economical on petrol too.

Can't comment on any other brands although the VW cars do have a more refined/luxury feel to them making the highest selling cars in S.A.

I've had my eyes recently on korean cars like the Kia Rio.

If I had to choose I'd probably go with 1.5L Mazda 2 with the 7" infotaintainment system, KIA Rio, Swift, Micra, or Fiesta.

But hey, it's your money..

SO you looking for a city run-around with long distance potential and some comfort, I assume AC is required and the rest optional.

Not a Polo.

What Year are you looking at?

These are some good choices

2005 Golf V
2007 RunX
2010 i10
2013/14 Fugo
2011/12 Jazz
2012/13 Mazda 2
2010 Nissan Tiida

Your best choice for second hand car is to go Japanese

2012/13 Mazda 2
My sister has one and it just ticker over to 200 000km with minimal maintenance needed, this car has been very reliable and very cheap to maintain.

2010 Nissan Tiida
My brother took over our mom Tiida sedan version and it is currently on 220 000km and it has been driving with no issues. My brother drives a lot and this car is very spacious, with all necessary features that makes it a pleasant place to be in and does its daily duties with no fuss. With normal maintenance car just keeps on running.

Too many damned choices. :)

*edit*

I quite like the aesthetics of the Mazda 2, gotta say.

That's how it gets you :D

Loving mine still, it's just a pleasure to drive.

I will admit I'm not a huge fan of the old design though (pre-2015), they really got it right with the new one though.

I'm not disregarding any previous suggestions, I'm just taking a general look at the moment to get a sense of things. Any comments on any cars I might post going forward would be appreciated.

First up:

2013 Hyundai i20 1.4

R125 900

e36 BMWs are really cheap and underrated, you can get very good condition ones for around 50k

Yeah, I definitely am looking for something more diminutive, easy to fix and light on petrol.

Basically, I'm looking for a motorbike with four wheels and a roof. :D

The I20 looks good, although you can still find a cheaper one than the 125k, it must be said that the best I20 is the first generation I20 1.6, they can be found at a similar mileage than that one but cheaper.

maintenance costs!

what maintenance costs? the car is as cheap to maintain as any other reasonable car

the last time I checked, admittedly this was 10 years ago, ATE front brake discs and pads for a 328i came to R800

the car uses normal sparkplugs and is rather simple in terms of its mechanics- if you go non vanos

Most cars are easy and cheap to maintain if you at the very least know how to hold a spanner, otherwise a simple job like changing brake pads can be a very expensive exercise.
