What is the average data usage for a household - with one working adult and 2 young adults / university students? So we are looking here at - emails, gaming, streaming music, watching youtube videos. Occasionally, we will watch a movie - but the internet is so slow, that we

The other day I mentioned that we use an average of +200gig a month and my brother nearly fell off his chair! How is that possible?

What can I do? How can I check data usage? Can it be a virus on a pc or on a mobile phone?

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Think 200gig is about normal for your family profile, especially with two students in the mix

We are 2 adults and 2 adult kids, in December we used about 1100 gigs

4 adults on the property... averaging 600 - 700 gigs easily every month... Peaked around the 1300 gig mark for December due to holidays and what not...

2 adults on the property and we average 450 - 550 GB a month

Jeez, these numbers are insane.

We are 2 adults and use about 40GB

I reckon 200-300 GB but the type of connection makes a difference as well as the devices used for streaming.

Assuming two HD tvs, running medium quality stream i.e. 720p-1080p then easily 250GB/mo. (you can limit ShowMax, Dstv Now, etc but e.g. YouTube, Netflix has no global setting so have to set it each time). Downloads for on device viewing generally have quality settings though.

Tip: Disable autoplay on YouTube as when bored and watching stuff u pass out and youTube will just keep playing and then you wake up with weird documentaries about reptile aliens hahaha

But then you also have to factor in packages on offer.. since you will have two students, you need something like Afrihost packages which bundle freetime for all but evenings and weekends. While your current use may be less realize that faster speeds mean more usage either due to more concurrent use (streaming, surfing, tablets) or viewing quality and amount of media watched which goes up fast with ease of use.

2 Adults, 1 Teenager. Circa 300-400 gigs a month. Netflix takes a hammering, along with U-Tube and gaming for the teen titan. Plus the usual browsing, email and other less data usage items.

Thank you very much for all the responses.

Wow!! 1100 gigs.... that is massive! Everybody elses excessive usage, doesn't really answer my question. I still feel that something is chowing our data.

Is there a difference in usage whether you are on ADSL, LTE or fibre, for instance?

Can anybody suggest a good and accurate app that track data usage on an ipad, iphone? And desktop pc and laptop, please?

Thank you very much. Can you elaborate on the type of connection please? Is there a difference in usage say between ADSL and LTE?

Faster connection will usually use more data as it's consumed quicker and auto upscale the quality.

If the speeds match, the difference doesn't really matter.

On our 4mbps ADSL we used around 200GB monthly, this was just daily usage, excluding free Night surfer. That depended on the Sonarr updating all our series over night.

Nothing else is chowing your data. What I do is to regularly check what devices are connected to the router and confirm it only our devices. I also use Netlimiter on the PC to see what is actively running.

All our phones have data usage monitors already and we normally check that to see which app uses what.

Average around 750gb, with December close to 1tb.
20mb fibre for just over a year. Was under 500gb on 10mb adsl.

2 adults, 1 univ & 2 at school... with other kids (family / friends) spending a day most weekends.

Besides xbox, mostly streaming (netflix, youtube, etc). Android phones & tablets and 4 Win10 devices.
