Hi all, I went to university and had to drop out due to a change in my financial situation. The university sent my debt to their lawyers and they sent a summons to me in August 2021. I spoke with them via email and they agreed to let me send proof that I was searching for jobs and unemployed until I could pay. I last sent them an email on the 17th of June 2022 but now the lawyers have sent me a warning in July of 2025 threatening further legal action. I was freshly 18 when I signed the university contract and didn't realise how serious it was. My question is since I last spoke to them in June 2022 and they reached out again in July 2025, wouldn't that fulfil the period of prescription or does the summons (which I don't know what happened to it afterwards) from 4 years ago do something to the period? I can't afford a lawyer so I'm hoping I can get some advice on what to do next.

Thank you for your time,

How much is the debt?

After not having heard from you in 3 years they rightly thought you were trying to get out of paying.

What have you been doing for the 3 years? Have you been saving up to pay them back?

My advise....start paying them back now.

the debt is around 70k, 20k of that is interest. I haven't had solid employment and have been doing piece jobs here and there for barely any pay. I did get lucky with one of those and got a sponsor for a course and am almost done with a software development bootcamp. I was dumb when it came to filling forms and sorting stuff out for university and it's been biting at me.

So what are you asking? Debt was 4 years ago and you should not pay?

I just want to find out if it's prescribed at this point. I was talking to a peer and they informed me that it might be so I'm trying to learn more

It might be. Prescribed debt is written off after 3 years. Sounds like it's been 3 years and a few weeks so it's going to be a tough fight ,especially if they have sent you a summons, and maybe can even prove that they send more during the 3 year period.

You will need to speak to a lawyer.

You said you were young and dumb. First rule in life - you signed a contract. There are consequences for your actions.

I accept this and you're 100% right. If it so happens that it isn't, I was fully prepared to sit down and talk to them as soon as I get a full time job. My classmate was the one that informed me about the whole prescription thing, I did not know anything about it hence why I'm trying to find out as much as possible. Hard way to learn a lesson but it is what it is. Thank you for your time, I truly appreciate it
