Hi,

I Just bought a flash (430EXii) for my SLR and i'm looking for a decent book to learn how to use it properly.

Can you recommend a book?

doesn't matter if it's only available via Amazon.

Thanks,

have a look at www.strobist.com if it still exists, great use of flash's.

For me i get the best effect indoors with the flash, point the flash up and use the ceiling as a light diffuser (if its white) if the images are a bit dark i bump the flash exposure compensation up 1 or 2 stops depending how far the ceiling is from the flash.

Alternatively read up how to work the flash in manual mode and pair that with manual mode on your SLR u can achieve some great looking shots indoors and out .

hope this helps a bit.

Youtube will help a lot, and therado is right, the strobist series is excellent, but I can't remember reading it as a beginner.

also google the photography school, its a blog with forum thats great for beginners and i'm sure they will have an article with flash photography.

i had some short clips from his dvd's really informative stuff, maybe there are still clips on youtube?

Strobist.com is an excellent resource.

The Digital SLR Photography magazine had an *excellent* article on flash photography in October 2009. Try and find a copy of that magazine.

exactly what i would have said!

some youtube channels that will help:
adarama pics, the / that nikon guy and B&H photo might have something

i pref are videos to books so my suggestion will be the strobists flash dvd collection. lighting in layers and strobist lighting seminar is what you need to look for.

I'm one who disagrees with the utjoep thing with this. It's much easier to have a document in hand that you can refer to, rather than trying to find a video, when in a tight spot!

I get what you're saying, but for me it's easy to watch the videos, then practice a lot. That way you don't get into tight spots easily, as you start becoming more and more familiar with what the situation requires, or how to apply the technical stuff to replicate creative vision.

Watch the video. make some notes and then create a cheat sheet ;) but ideally watch the video and practice the techniques. You shouldn't need anything to refer to
