Need help with a remote control for Sansui Media Player

Hi guys,

Due to some [stupid] prank I played, my boet's remote control for his Sansui Media Player no longer works. I have promised to get him a new remote. I am going to try Incredible Connection Hi-Fi Corp (The latter is where I'm redirected from on sansui's SA website). Being Sansui, I have a suspicion that I am going to struggle to come right. Does anyone know of a local dealer / local person that can a) fix the remote / source one for me?

You can also try a phone with IR like Galaxy S4. Download ZappIR from play store.

Possibly come right on Ebay as well if you run out of other options.

Thanks. I will do :)

I swapped his batteries around in the remote - thought it would just aggravate him (and would be harmless). Apparently the reversed polarity blew it - he is aggravated, but not in the good way :)
 
Another option is to buy him a new one then use his with your phone as remote.
 
I was contemplating that hey...
Only problem is my phone (Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus) - Gingerbread if I recall... probably doesn't support ZappIR or the like...
 
You won't be able to buy a seperate remote, you will need to replace the entire unit.

Hey everyone...

Just an update on this. A mate at work got me in touch with Connoisseur Electronics who gave me a remote to try out, which i will do this weekend and let everyone know...

Does anyone know where I could get a list of possible codes to try out?
 
I have an MXIII android media player which has a feature that can read IR codes. I also have a Realtek RTD1185 Egreat media player which has a remote that I can read. There should be many similarities with the Sansui remote.

These remotes use the NEC protocol. The Egreat remote produces codes in this form - 0xAABBCCCC where AA is a checksum, BB is the scan code and CCCC is a factory code - in my case the factory code is ff00.

Partial list of codes (AABB see above AA+BB = ff)

Start by sending out 0xb34cff00 and then 0xb34cfe01, 0xb34cfd02 etc. and see whether you can get any response such as a "1" being pressed. I can provide a full set of codes if you can get the few shown above to work.

Thanks for the Help Yotch, but (and forgive me for my ignorance / stupidity). The codes on the remote are all numerics. Is there a way of converting to that format / Hex. How do I send out, for example, 0xb34cff00 wiht just the numeric keys?

@craigba: What type of universal remote do you have? Are you able to cycle through all the different remotes and get just one key to produce a response from the media player? I think that the factory code ff00 might be very common on some video machines or TVs so you might be able to find just one key that works quite easily.

You could also try to use a laptop to generate the IR signals if you can't get any response from the universal remote. You need to wire up two IR LEDs and a resistor to a 3.5mm earphone jack and then use a few different pieces of software to generate a suitable wav file for each hex code for playback through the IR LED tansmitter.

@Yotch: Sorry for the delay. I saw your response and have not had the courage to respond. As soon as I see things that mention Hex my eyes glaze over...

To answer the first part: It's a Magic Remote from connoisseur electronics. I have managed to get the codes working on the most part, but apparently there are no codes to increase the volume. I can turn the volume down, but not up...

As for the rest of the post, thanks for the help. It sounds a bit complicated. Is it?
 
@craigba: There are many different types of universal remotes. Some of them like the One For All range have a little connector near the battery holder which you can connect to a serial port to allow you to download codes. This is probably the most difficult option.

What codes did you program into the remote to get it to recognise the media player? If you have exhausted all of the possible subcodes/combinations etc. and you are still unable to find a correct mapping then I think that the LED sound card transmitter will be the simplest option.

The idea is to use the PC to generate the correct IR signal and then use the universal remote to learn this code and assign it to the correct key. There are only 256 possible key codes so it shouldn't be too difficult to find the correct one once you have the factory code working.

Before worrying about the hardware, try to see if you can use the software correctly. Go to the awe-europe website (http://www.awe-europe.com/irhex_converter.html) and type in a hex code like b34cff00 or 00ff4cb3. You should get a long string of numbers in the window below as follows -

Download pronto2wav from (http://www.compendiumarcana.com/iraudio/pronto2wav.exe) and paste this string into the program and try to generate a wav file (audio file). Try to play it back to see that you have created it correctly. Once you are confident that you know how to convert hex into a suitable wav file then you can buy the 2X 940nm LEDs, the 68Ohm resistor and the 3.5mm audio jack and build the transmitter. The components should cost <R5 in total. You just play back this wav file through the IR LEDs instead of the speaker and hopefully you can get your media player to respond.

Here are some links to several articles showing how to do this on an iPhone. I would rather use a laptop but you can get a better idea of what to do from the photographs. Personally I would also use the 68Ohm resistor in the lirc link (http://lirc.org/html/audio.html) to avoid damaging the sound card output.
