Hey guys, I've got an old Dell 1950 PowerEdge I found at a client and want to convert it to a firewall server. My problem is that the screen wont display anything. When the server starts the screen wakes up but the immediately goes back to standby mode. I don't get BIOS post or anything displayed. I've tried both VGA ports, the one in front and back, and also removed and reseated the CPU, all RAM simms, both drives and all other boards.

There are no error codes on the front LCD but I do get intrusion when I open the lid while it is powered.

Any ideas how to get it fixed?

other than stripping it down to the barebone nothing, try get some form of error out of it. Even a no ram detected error. That will at least tell you the machine is trying to boot.

Hmmm, I removed the RAM and got no error. I then put it back and removed the CPU and got a CPU error. Once I put the CPU back I removed both HDDs and got an error for that as well...

Edit: OK, HDD LEDs are not flashing either so I guess it's not starting boot?

Test with differtent PSU. MB may not be getting enough power. If that doesn't work, throw it away as the MB is probably finished and klaar. See any swollen/leaking caps?

:( Wil niks weet... PSUs seems fine, don't have any other to test with though. All components seem to be fine as well and no swollen or leaking caps. Also just tried a NVRAM reset and did nothing. I will leave it here overnight and see what happens. It's been off for about two years just gathering dust.

Take it to www.mousehouse.co.za Speak to Ronald. They do Dell Server Repairs on out of warranty servers. As far as I know they do not charge a quote/assessment fee.
