Hi there,

I'm not good with this stuff.
At the company I work I can click my network and sharing center and join cape town VPN, I am in JHB,
when its connected I can see all the computers, servers, shares, printer on the CT network.
Sometimes the vpn doesn't work then I can use RDP and remote into the server and access the files I need.

Id like set something like this up, I always use teamviewer but its such a hack getting the ID and password from the other side.

What do I need to join the VPN on the other side and access all their resources? and if it doesn't work how do I just remote in to the PC on the other side?

Thanks!

Well you need the VPN to have the networks resources. You can use something like LogMeIn to access an individual machine on the network.

You can do it with Teamviewer

Just setup Teamviewer on the other PC's for unattended access, create a Teamviewer login, link the PC's with Teamviewer to your Teamviewer login account.

Easy, with great functionality.

If this was my company, i would not allow this kind of connectivity.

Fix the vpn, or report the vpn issues to someone who can fix it

Teamviewer is a great tool for fixing issues and sharing under CONTROLLED conditions. I would not regard it as a permanent solution for you VPN issues.
You need to get the VPN fixed as it ensures that the transfer of the files is taking place under secure conditions. I would not see Teamviewer as secure.

Firstly you cant install teamviewer on a server edition of windows without a paid license as they regard that as using it for commercial use. I would ask your IT guys to look into why your VPN is not working or why it keeps going down, get the original problem sorted out first instead of always finding a work around.
Iv got a server 2003 server in one of our remote branches thats been working no stop for about 6 years now, install and configue RRAS (routing and remote access server) configure DynDNS account with the client updater on the server and you are all good to go...

Or replace your VPN with IAG and use something like no-ip if you do not have a fixed IP. That way you can work with a normal VPN or SSL VPN.
