Need info from MTN users in Fourways/Broadacres area

Hi all

Having tried everything under the sun to get 8ta to resolve problems in this area, I'm now going to see if MTN's 2Gb bundle will provide the type of performance I need (i.e. stay connected for more than 10 minutes at a time). The 8ta pricing is great, but their service is so far below par it just negates the whole deal. Seriously.

I bought a MTN prepaid sim and loaded some airtime for the purpose of doing a couple of quick checks and speedtests. I'm picking up about 40% signal strength (according to the TP-Link router) but the K4504-Z modem is lighting up green, which would seem to indicate an edge connection(?). Ping is really slow (150+ ms).

My question to anyone in this area -
1. Are you getting reasonable performance (speedtest results?) and making 3G/HSDPA connections?
2. Do you know where the MTN tower is (so I can aim my external antenna properly)?

Did you mean K4505-Z?

Yes, that should be K4504-Z - my mistake!

Actually this modem has worked flawlessly in the recent past on CellC, as well as on 8ta until a month or so back. I''ve also been using a MF688, but still having the same problem.

I've been using 8.ta 10GB for 6 months now without issues, even though their coverage map showed no coverage i took the plunge and signed up.....best decision i ever made.

I hate to say it, but do not sign for the package in that area. The speed and signal strength is a problem, and you can thank the tree huggers for that. Im not saying it will always be like that but at present it is.

Cedar Lakes, near Broadacres. You wouldn't happen to know where your tower is? I'm aiming at the one in Kya Sands at the moment.

The closest tower here is Vodacom and CellC - problem is that their bundle prices are ridiculous, and I'm not committing to 12 months upfront with CellC again (I'm hoping that better deals will be forthcoming, or 8ta's service will improve!).

Ohh you are on the other side, the closest tower to me is in Dainfern. I would also advice you against commiting to a long term contract, only reason i took a risk was because i needed data for the iPad when i'm on the move, at home i have ADSL.
