So three weeks ago at 2:30AM a drunk driver came through the back gate of our complex, carried the gate on the front of his merc for 25m until with a huge amount of force he T-Boned my new Honda amaze CVT that I got 4 months back from an emigrating family member. The car was less than a year old. My car was smashed into the corner of my garden wall smashing up every side/door panel on the car, shattering a fair amount of glass, and bending the roof slightly. Insurance wrote the car off as repairs where more than 60% of the value of the car despite the engine being untouched.

Anyways I have my insurance payout now but am a bit torn about what to do next so I thought I would ask some advice. Firstly I loved that car. I drove a little Toyota Tazz for 15 years as a means to achieve my financial goals. It had no power steering, no aircon, and was not exactly comfortable. This car was my big upgrade as a reward for getting the financial goals achieved. I loved it and want to replace with the same car (Amaze CVT), or another decent Honda. I however prefer not to buy second hand cars that I don't know the history of. Heard of too many bad experiences. Hence the jam as the insurance payout was a fair bit under the cost of a new CVT Amaze.

Anyways, payout was about R180K. I don't need a second car until probably Jan as I am working from home. Insurance on the car was about R800 which I am now saving. I can also earn interest on the 180K. Hence each month I don't buy it means more money towards the new one. On the other hand I don't know if and when annual price increases might kick in and that could mess it all up. Also buying in Dec effectively means I can register it in Jan only making it a 2021 car.

So there are a lot of factors and I am not sure when to try purchase and how to get best value for money. If a new model is due that could also factor in as the older model could be discounted and i can get that, or perhaps i like the new model and prefer to pay in a bit to get that. So anyways any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated, especially on timing, how to get value for money, good deals, etc. I knowledge on this type of thing is fairly limited and I know there are people here who know far more than me!

For now I am kind of leaning towards waiting till December and aiming for a decent demo model or something from a dealer, but keeping an eye out in the meantime in case something great comes along. That could be a really bad idea however if the price goes up in the meantime. In case it matters I am based in JHB.

Just buy toyota Yaris/auris , Toyota just works and has good resale value.

Also look different insurance company, you paying too much honda amaze at R800 a month. Unless you under the age of 30 then the price is probably fair.

And sooooo exciting to drive.

Definitely planning on shopping around for insurance, but just want to wait a bit to try get my excess back from the other driver via insurance as it was a no fault claim.

Toyota I have a lot of respect for, as said I drove a tazz for years, but I just find them very unexciting cars. Buying a Toyota is about as exciting as buying a toaster for me.

I work in Sandton, the CVT gearbox was incredible for that traffic compared to a manual. Sticking with automatic of some flavour is a requirement at this point. I see the Honda WR-V might also arrive in SA before year end and it is fairly close in price to the Amaze in India. Might want to test drive that too.

Was he convicted or tested for drunken driving?
Did his insurance pay?
Asking because the recovety of your xs is dependent thereon.

He was very apologetic and said he would pay for everything but was definitely drunk. He admitted it to us. All witnesses agree but he was not tested. Once his wife arrived she persuaded him to flee the scene though once she heard cops where on the way. Our security who where on scene tried to tell them to stay but they just drove off anyways. The cops never did arrive though so academic really. He has agreed he was at fault, agreed to pay to my insurance and put his insurance broker in touch with my insurance as I understand it. Not that he can deny it as we have video footage and multiple witnesses of the whole event. He did call me personally later that day and gave a very heartfelt apology. Said it was very out of character for him. He had apparently had Corona virus and had been in isolation for 3+weeks until he recovered and tested clear and then once released had a celebration that got out of hand with a friend or something (not that that is any excuse for drunk driving).

So he has co-operated, and is paying the complex for damages to the common property and for my car via insurance. He agreed to pay the excess too when I chatted on the phone but I prefer it all goes through insurance company. He offered to settle it all on the side and not go via insurance but I preferred to go the formal route as if he did not pay I would then have to sue him which I did not want to take the risk of. Overall its been a huge nuisance though and has the potential to leave me out of pocket, hence this thread asking for some advice.

There will be LOTS of good deals on new cars in the coming months with low interest rates.

I'd look at a 2018 or 2019 Mazda. With the 2020 - 2021 facelifts, these 1 or 2 year old cars are going dirt cheap.

Take your time. Shop around.

So I have been waiting a bit on this purchase. Just a question regarding prices you see on all these second hand site's. Any idea if the listed price on like auto trader etc is negotiable or is the listed price generally what cars go for?

You can try negotiate. Some dealers are more open to this. Especially at Month End.

Everything is negotiable especially now when sales are down.

I'm saying this under correction but I think that loophole closed years ago already.

If i understand your OP, the insurance payed out and therefore you will be purchasing cash, then yes you can definately negotatiate based on the listed price.

Had a smiliar thing happen to me. Fairly new Honda Civic of 9 months, insurance write off due to a horse-and-trailer Merc Actros truck coming through our company gate and smashing my vehicle (bumper, side doors, mirror, mags/tyres on one side, roof slightly bent. Insurance paid out around 90% of cost. I offered to buy back the damaged vehicle from them for salvaging parts and scrap metal and they surprisingly agreed at 20k.

I ended up replacing all the panels and spending ~40k on repairs to get it looking almost the same condition as before the accident.
